Breathing space...why does everyone start so close?

I will admit, I am no expert on this game, but im tryign to learn.  I have had quite a few games when I start them, myself and my opponents are literally right on top of each other.   The last game i started, we were all so closley packed, I had ran into all my opponents in the first 10-15 turns of the game.  Is therea settign I am missing in options?  It just seems to me they would want to allow bpeople a little bit of space...just a thought.

Check your map settings and the number of factions. It also depends on the map, I've had games where everyone was on top of each other, I've had others where I had to explore 50 turns in one direction before bumping into even a minor AI.

So if we had a large map and 1 faction it can take forever to find someone... if we had a small map with all the factions we find them faster?  (whisltes)  However, large map with everyone on it, how long does it take on average?

There's also some larger than large maps in the mods you can download.

I just started a new game on a small map with ALL the factions. I was trying to see if that stopped the city spam... we'll see. But I started just next to three others. We'll see how it goes.

End of Archonsod's quote

I've been playing on large maps since they became available and my impression is that even if there are a limited number of 'canned geographies' in the map set, the placement of stuff that's not a geographic feature is fairly well randomized. Just like Archonsod, I've had some 1.0-1.06 maps that seemed empty of other factions and others that were so crowded I ditched them pretty quickly on account of my turtling tendencies.
