Elemental Review

From experience, not hype.

What might make my perspective useful/interesting is that I knew going into my purchase that Elemental was technically problematic.  I bought it because I wanted to be able to verify for myself whether all the bashing was valid or just sensationalist hype.  So I bought the game and have been playing for several days now.  The review is now up on my blog:

"Word on the street has been that Elemental: War of Magic, a highly-anticipated continuation of the once-glorious genre of fantasy empire building, has been released as a huge steaming pile of bugs and unfinished features.  I heard this, and immediately decided to purchase the game.  Could it live up to either billing?  The next Master of Magic, or the worst release since Myth II reformatted hard drives wholesale?"

I think the bugs are a bit exaggerated, least based on my experience.  I don't know how many people remember just how bad MoM was when it was first released -- and the frequent crashes never actually got repaired for that game.   I know that some people have had really bad experiences as far as crashing is concerned, with the day 0 patch.  But already, the game seems to be far more stable than MoM EVER was.

I do agree with you, though, that we should expect more from game releases, and that this game is kind of conservative, and I can't wait to see what this game will look like in a few months with all the coming additions and mods.  Also, problems and all, it currently IS the most addictive 4X game I've played since Alpha Centauri.

That review echoes my sentiments very well, huge potential if emphasis is put on modding tools so that modding can take off, CTDs are stomped and general polish is added.
