Dissapearing troops !?!!

Once my troops are wounded (lets say a Party - 4 units), if I keep them outside of my settlements to heal, they eventually heal at full capacity over a long period of time.  But if I store them inside a settlement, the party will often go from 4 to 3 or 2 or 1 unit (plus it will also take the same amount of time to heal).  This is very disturbing since they have accumulated a lot of experience (high hit points).

Lol just posted this is a different thread but this one fits it better:

 

When units go into a city with defense structures the added hitpoints are counted as damage or something, because sometimes you loose half your troop (eg from 9 knights to 4). At least that's an explanation i have come with...

Then shouldn't your damaged units heal a portion of the damage if you loose units?  Or at least shouldn't the units heal faster inside the cities?  Or maybe there should be a Civilization (Research Technology) building that could be used to heal units faster?
