Construction problems

Hi all, hope someone can help me please.

I'm part way through a game, it's going well, but I'm running into some issues constructing some buildings.

The image below shows a city I built in a particular position to try and keep free access to the lands south of here. I didn't want the red guy building a city there and isolating my southern empire. The city went down ok, but I cannot build anything there - the options are all greyed out. I have the required resources, but I can't even put down a workshop. Not sure why it's got a random city name above it - that's not the name I gave the city, but hey-ho.

It did occur to me that it might be a placement issue - perhaps I've got no-where to build because of the surrounding terrain?

Also, the fire shard to the west of Murkwood (see first picture) I cannot seem to build upon. I've got the required Shard Harvesting tech, but I can't seem to even click on the shard to build improvements (I checked the build option for the city to see if it was there, but it wasn't).

Any advice would be welcome!

Could it be still hidden goodie huts or quest locations? Just an idea, seeing how low your adventure tech is. This could also be true for the fire shard. In one of my games I had one of those "spawn" / appear over an already existing improvement of mine.

First, trees, forest area can't be build on (another undocumented feature), the hill to southeast is also an issue.

Bring in a spell caster and case (lower land) on the hills to see if that helps. I don't know yet if there is a spell to clear out trees/forest areas, or it could be the zone of control of your first city is covering the clear area around the second. Try building from the fist city to see if it allows your to build anything around the second.

All else fails send a saved game to stardock!

I am coming to the opinion that certain tiles are reserved for a placed city when it is placed, whether it uses them or not. I took over a couple cities that were quite close together and neither of them could build anything in between them, suggesting overlapping areas of control and reserved tiles.

Thanks - I researched half a dozen adventure levels on the resource and quest advances - a ruin hut did appear to the north of my city. I completed the quest, the ruin disappeared, but it looks like it's too close to another city to build there. The southern approach looks like it's all woods.

The extra levels didn't help with the crystal shard though. It's weird - it's like it's not there. It appears on the cloth map, but not coloured like other shards, more like grey with some red striping.

Does anyone understand how the adventure research works? I was fearful of populating the wild with creatures I couldn't defeat, and that's why I didn't research it much. However, the extra resources that have popped up look extremely useful.

I think we need a worker unit who can slowly clear forests (and gain materials for doing it!).

I also second Rabenhoff's idea that there may be hidden locations currently unknown to you. Also, try pad152 spellcasting idea.

From what I've gathered adventure tech lets you use the shinies on the map and make adventurers cheaper to hire relative to the world level. Not exactly sure how the creature works just yet.
