Can you level without combat?

So me and all my champions etc can only level via combat?

I was hoping we could assign people to kingdoms (guard etc), and they "grew/leveled" that way too.

Like this one guy I have, he gives bonus to farming/food. I would expect he would level by being placed ON the farm...not out fighting monsters...

yes, currently you and your champions only level via combat. I agree that this is too limiting and renders the champions useless, especially the ones with "social" benefits, in the mid/late game. But I am sure it's one of the things they will change in the future.

Didnt Masters of Magic have your heroes gain 1 xp per turn? I think thats a pretty neat feature.

Indeed. They also had heroes that increased the experience gain of all the units in the same army. Generally speaking, heroes in Master of Magic were a whole lot better. They had several special abilites and leveld accordingly to become great singular units in the late game.

no, you kept on getting that +1 xp per turn.

And yes, skills should level up as well, the special abilities of MoM were pretty damn fun... OH well, thats where modders come into the picture, I guess.

A total-conversion to MoM would be interesting, to say the least.

There are experience books in goodie huts.

Yeah, but they are so few, and far apart they can hardly help you level.

You can also take non fighting type champions along for battles and leave them in the back, out of harm's way.  They will level up.

I think it would be cool if champions would get experience by finishing quests too.

You should be able to eventually research "training academies" for the end game, that allow you to exchange (a lot of) gold and materials (crystals too , probably,,,need more use for shards) to train up heroes stationed in that city. It should be prohibitively expensive for higher levels though.  Just a way to make sure your less used heroes are in competitive shape for the end game.

I just turn my heroes into generals, a couple squads of up to date melee soldiers and 10 heroes or so killing mobs on the map, easy leveling even for the super wimpy heroes.

The ones I hate are the guys with 18 or more STR or INT and a city benefit as their only talent.

Huh, I just assumed they did.  This definitely needs to be added.  I also think gaining experience from successful diplomatic transactions would be a nice addition as well, but it would obviously need to be balanced so you can't just rack up a bunch of soft-ball diplomatic gestures for easy experience.

I suppose that allowing champions to gain experience doing "things" other than combat could bring some balance issues. I'd like it though. Or if not, increase their bonuses and/or lower their cost to recruit.

Considering that you get to train more experienced troops once you have done some research, I must agree with the idea of somehow allowing Champions to get some training (in addition or as alternative to other ways of gaining experience).

I'm working on implementing a passive experience gain per turn for my "Abilities and Histories Mod" but cannot get it to work. I have some ideas and it must be possible but the trick is implementing it. This is rather essential for merchants and farmers who aren't out conquering and adventuring.

Does anybody remember the old "Warlords II" strategy game, one of the first strategy games to include hero characters. There your heroes got xp from ... *searches the ancient handbook and awards himself one xp*

  • searching ruins (3xp - just to show the relationship of xp in this old game)
  • capturing cities (2xp)
  • defeating armies outside of cities (1xp)
  • being blessed (1xp) ... you could be blessed once in every temple
  • completing quests (10xp)
