Keeping army units alive in campaign (chapter 5+)

I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong, but it seems like the enemies I'm fighting in the campaign are much tougher than my line troops.  I can build knights with great defenses, but they always start with 5 hit points.

Specifically, the point at which I started having problems was the troll with the dragon. He could one-shot my knights, leaving my sovereign vulnerable. Once my sovereign dies, I go back to the city, rebuild, and kill him on the next try. And almost every fight after that has opponents that hit that hard.  Archers worked a little better since I can always keep them out of range, but the point where I gave up tonight is when I lost two armies to the demon that hits the party with a 3x3 aoe. I can't keep allies alive through that when the allies are always level 1.

Did I miss something?  The one thing that's surprised me in the campaign so far is that it hasn't let me build anything that lets me do research -- they all seem to be quest rewards.  I've maxed out the armor and weapons I can put on guys, but I can't get them any additional health. I haven't been using the NPCs I was given at the start because they didn't look like they had combat skills, but I'm wondering if their health makes up for that.

To be honest, I haven't really touched campaign, but I'm guessing the low HP totals are due to them being level 1. Have them participate in a bunch of battles against weak mooks and survive, and they should level and gain higher max HP totals. At least, that's how it works in normal games.

Build them in stacks. When creating a unit, click on the icons that change the amount in that unit (located just above unit description), that way, one stack has the combined HP of however many guys are in it.

There may be a problem where to find the  weak enemies, when they are dead already. I think you can produce more experienced units later in the game. However I have played Elemental only once, because after patch 1.05 caused not being able to enter the tactical battle.  The setting of the experience is in the same place as how many units you build at once.

You can build more experienced troops in the campaign. I was able to do that just before meeting the trolls. And as nayphen said, you can build them in stacks, that helps a lot. You can't research those things in the campaign, but these abilities are activated through some events, sometimes a bit too hidden in the event-text.

I started a new game after hearing that 1.06 broke save games.

My problem was that I'd mostly missed the experience and squad size buttons completely in playing around with the game. I assumed the buttons to create 4 guys was just a shorthand way to make more guys, not to make a squad of e-lite fighting men.

Now that I'm using those, I'm doing far better -- I'm past the trolls already, and every fight has been a cake walk. Particularly once I started hasting my squad of 8.
