How to gaine level...?

How do i get level so i can go into notable Locations level 2. Im level 1 and cant seem to figure out how to get level in this area.

Dont remember exactly what it was called, but its in Adventure Research.

I second that about a tech tree in the manual, or in an image file here in the forums (*hint* *hint*)
