Can't equip named NPCs with heavy plate?

I have three named NPCs running around with my king's army and even though I bought heavy plate for each of them none of them can equip it. My king has all heavy plate but none of the NPCs do. When I go into their equipment inventory to equip the items simply are not there however if I trade items I can see them with the pieces or if I interact with the shop I can sell it back to the shop. But I can't equip it. Very frustrating! Is there a STR amount needed to wear it or is this a bug? I can't for the life of me figure out why I can't equip the items. Light plate worked fine but heavy plate is a no go?

Surely I'm not the only person that has researched heavy plate and tried to equip the named NPCs like Janusk with it only to have it not appear in his equipment tab.
