can someone explain how the refugee camps work?

in 1.01 i see a refugee camp which has something to do with 100 pop. built it remotely, but the city pop cap didn't reflect that. updated to 1.05, ran a turn and nothing seems to have changed. going to start a new game to see if it makes any difference.

does it have to be walled in? is it supposed to just up max cap by 100?

It ups the cap. It's basically a population cap resource.

in a 1.05 game, i had it within the walls and the pop cap works.

does that mean it works only when within walls?

God, I hope not. I don't want those filthy refugees in my beautiful city That'd be a real hassle.

Its worked for me before, even if you build it remotely.  The refugee camp is like a massive 'house', adding 100 population to the linked cities max compared to the 25 for Hut or the 50 for House.

Hi,

I believe that refugee camps need to be linked to a city to work (since their bonus is by definition city-based), but they do not need to be absorbed into a city.  However, wild improvements do need to be within 5 tiles of a city to be linked to it, so is it possible that your refugee camp was just too far away from any of your cities to link to one of them?  If you have a save game, I could take a look at it and make sure there isn't anything wrong, if you'd like.  Thanks.

no savegame... i'll see what happens the next time i come across it. i think it says linked and producing 0 / 10. can't remember if it was 5 square or not. can't be more than lvl 3/4 city i expect and within zoc.

then again it was 1.01 i think

there's a refugee thingy that's built. 2 squares from the city starting square, not connected.. and the max pop is definitely not including its 100 (click the pop bit in the report and it's included in the detailed breakdown though.)

Thanks for the save.  It's revealed that refugee camps that are outside of a city do not actually affect the cap of the city they are linked to until the city is built up to them and that refugee camp becomes protected by the walls of the city.  However, the population cap breakdown for a city a refugee camp is linked to, but not a part of, is still showing the refugee camp as affecting it.  Thanks for bringing up this inconsistency, refugee camps will be changed to correctly affect the population of a linked city without requiring being a part of the city.  In the meantime, you can gain the benefits of your refugee camps by building your city out to them so that they join the city itself.  Sorry for the confusion.
