Scope of Weapons and Equipment

I have been following this game in an excruciatingly close manner for roughly and hour now, and I have to say my interest is piqued to a point that it has not reached in a long while.  Rather than go on about what looks so right in this game, however, I am going to cut to the chase and lay out my question:

What is the extent of weapons/armor/artifacts/etc. that can be discovered in this game?  As a loot fanatic, I just have to know to scope and variety of items available to me.  Are items randomly or procedurally generated, in a Diablo-esque manner?  Are there a large number of handcrafted items?  Are there few items, with nothing exotic like a mace that spawns venomous kittens?  I watched some of the videos of gameplay early into a match, and saw the "Rusty Sword" and generic shield that were picked up.  Were those just dull starter items. to be replaced by flaming scimitars and elastic halberds when the game gets rolling?  Or are the choices limited to the mundane and ordinary, leaving my pseudo-Sauronic fantasies in the dust.

The bottom line: Will there be abundant and epic loot to be found, to keep me motivated to do the next quest and kill the next enemy?

Any assistance is much appreciated and will help shape my purchase decision.  Thanks a bunch.

Having only what Ive seen so far in my 10+ hours of play since the pre-release, the equipment selection is Not Random. You can randomly find various magic items in chests and for quests, but I've found that to be rare. Usually I get minerals or gold or a 'sellable' item, one you cannot use but can sell to your vendors.

That being said, the loot you can tech to is interesting and varied, though I wouldnt exactly call it Balanced yet. Lords Hammers, for example, are FAR greater than most other weapons Ive found.

The most interesting and imho FUN part is you can customize not just your heroes, but the units you build as well! Im looking forward to mods/patches adding even MORE options and maybe balancing things (so there isnt one BEST piece of equipment for a slot), but in its current state its still fun.

Remember, I havent seen too much of the game yet. Ive just played 3 stable games (and some crashy ones before the 1.05 patch and hotfix) so take it for what its worth.
