Patch 1.5 Enemy with a Drake

Ok so.. started a new game with this new patch.  Thought I was doing good at turn 15, came to an enemy border and oh wow look at that, they're town is sitting here waiting for me.  So I go in to attack and it's being defended by a drake.  At turn 15.  What the heck gives??

Minor factions get a guardian unit. Sometimes it's a good guardian. Sometimes, well, rarely, but still, it's a drake. Be careful who you attack. You never know who their guardian is.

Me too.

Players can get guardian units when their cities upgrade but the odds of getting something that good are like 1 in a zillion.

LOL!

Guess we'll need to carry an extra red shirt in our Army.

* points to a red shirted peon *

You, go attack that city.

* peon bursts into flames*

Damn, guess they have a good guardian.

the guardian unit that is spawned could be made a bit better. :/ Half the time I get a 4/4 "Swarm Spider" that is useless ;;

I mean, I don't want dragons and drakes left and right but they could be a bit better.

Hope the crash due to running out of memory is fixed. X64 memory leak I'm talking about.

...sigh, now im gonna have to re-load like 500x to see if I ever get anything cool...best i've gotten so far is a bear with tusks (I think?)..I forget what it was called.

haha, I've only seen that a couple times. Usually those guys have wolves or something weak defending them. My "guardian" units usually suck too. I'd advise you to make the player bonus guardian units... human and somewhat more decent, please.

I prefer to mostly get crap so the good ones are more awesome of a surprise.

Yah but if you get crap 95% of the time, then you're "wasting" an improvement 95% of the time. I mean, maybe the Level 1->2 guardian unit isn't so badass, but I would expect something rather awesome for 2->3 and espiecially 3->4.

Remember you're frontloading your benefits. Instead of having an increased production for something for the rest of the game, you're frontloading that into a strong earlier military presence. It shouldn't be SO strong if you get one and no one else does, you insta-win. But it should be strong enough that if someone is focusing on econ and only has a marginal army, if you bring your marginal army + your guardian unit to fight you should win without too much struggle. (the Rock-Paper-Scissors of strategy games: rush beats econ which beats turtle which beats rush. the guardian unit appeals to both turtle and rush strats. The thing is that econ is ALWAYS the strongest choice right now).

I think if nothing else guardian units shouldn't cost upkeep...
