Just fired up 1.05 and started playing a game, but I ran into this problem:
I'm assuming that that's not supposed to happen.
I got it too. Did you happen to create a faction and make it empire? Thats happens only when I do that. I tested as premade factions and even made a kingdom but they all had tech trees.

Yes it occurred when making a custom faction and not when using one of the pre-made factions.
Yep. It's when you use the mod tools to create an Empire faction. So for now, don't do that. 
We just checked in a fix, so we're going to update (for tonight, we're just disabling the empires). There's a stupid archer bug that got put in this evening that we're fixing while we're at it.
Yeah, I made a custom faction and got this too. Stock factions are all fine.
So there will be another patch tonight?

so ... about that Data.zip file :/ What exactly is that? I want to investigate it but I can't, it's a .tmppk file?
Sorry for the necropost but... I loaded the game today and this happened. Did not change anything at all. Deleted my Elemental folder in My Documents and it fixed it. Still, it's weird...
You may have had an old fallen faction that lacked it's techtree. It won't be a problem for additional fallen factions that are designed.
