Fireball misses 5 times in a row????

So a major competitor of mine is moving in. I have grouped and experienced archers, but his sovereign has high armor. So I plan on getting him with magic.  the encounter goes well, except that I "miss" with the fireball no less than five times in a row. Luckily the archers could hit him once he got close (not sure if I understand the mechanics of that, but best not to look a gift horse in the mouth).

Any idea why a fireball would miss that many times? I know the "miss" could be a result of zero damage, but I find that hard to believe.  Especially when considering I have 2 operating fire shrines (I even doubled checked after, they were built)

In my experience, opposing sovereigns have very high magic resistance or are immune to spells in general.  It would be rather easy to kill a sovereign with a single spell if they did not since they tend to have lower hit points.

It is frustrating but meh, I guess it's balanced.

hmmm, this would imply a sovereign with high armor is almost unstoppable...

End of nOObonian's quote
no just harder to kill. I had a game where one of the female evil ai factions (I dont have them memorized yet) had a Sword of Wrath and Light Plate armor by like turn 35. I kinda avoided her for awhile till I had the tools to take her out around turn 80 or so.

I think the issue is with the word "Missed", we should see something like "Spell Failed" and/or "Spell Deflected". Magic shouldn't be 100% all the time. I always liked the magic system in the Old Wizardry series, the higher the level or more difficult the spell, the greater chance of failure, sometimes a spell would blow up in your own face and damage your party members, magic is a dangerous thing! Cell pones, cars, guns jam etc. nothing works 100% of the time, you've just been spoiled!

Different terms would be a good idea then.

yeah i agree with that, miss is a miss, spell resisted is spell resisted or some such.

Maybe she had the protect spell on her? The one that gives 100% spell defence (not sure how quickly it decreases when getting attacked by magic repeatedly since ive never used it, but it seems like the only viable explanation)
