How Do You Break A Treaty?

I had non-aggression, trade, and tech treaties with Capitar, along with a good relationship - until they went and built an outpost on the very spot I had planned to (iron, crystal, and Fire shards all within easy reach).  So I marched my bestest army right up to the city (which was completely undefended, by the way) but I couldn't launch a surprise attack. But I couldn't declare war, either - that was grayed out in the diplomacy menu.  As was the "treaties" option.

Is my only choice to wait it out until the non-aggression treaty expires?

correct.. you have to wait until the terms expire... at least in the current version...

That's kind of the whole point.  Non-aggression treaties would be meaningless if you could just break them whenever you want.  It'd be nice if you could choose how many turns it would last, though.

What's the point of a non aggression pact if you can't use it to guarantee a surprise attack? ;)

I think you could balance the abuse of surprise attacks by simply lowering your diplomatic standings with everyone (except maybe the people that like those sort of things) when you do it. How does that sound?

Its funny that you are asking how to break a treaty...I don't even know how to start one. :)

You need to research it in the diplomacy/cooperation tree, then there is a relationships section which allows you to view all your standings and make treaties etc. What I want is to be able to set up alliances pre-game, as I've been able to do in every other 4X game I've played.

Click on the dynasties option and try arrange a marraige and it will reset the page, you will then be able to declare war again. Its a bug but useful. The devs may fix this and add a legitimate way to break allience later.

Yeah, someone pointed that out to me.  Has it already been reported in the bug forum?
