spells in city

Since the betas, I have never been unable to cast a spell within a city.  For instance, if summoning a creature, I always have to cast the spell beyond the city itself.

This was not a huge problem; however, I recently tried to cast a spell to improve city performance--hadn't tried that before--and, once again, the spell could not be cast.  This is more of a problem than not being able to summon creatures within the city!

 

Is there something simple I'm missing?

You're not missing anything. I'm not sure if it's by design or not, but right now you can't cast spells out of cities. My gut says it's not quite by design, since that means a defending Sovereign can't get the city garrison bonus and cast on the map at the attacker at the same time.

But, when I tried to cast the spell to improve city performance, I wasn't even in the city.

Did you click on the city center? Were you already supporting the max number of enchantments? You can only maintain as many enchants as you have Essence, unless they changed it for release.

I didn't know about the cap on number of enchantments.  That could be it, since I had a number of summoned creatures.  Thanks for the info.

I've been having same issue, i started new game, my first spell i tried to cast was "natures bounty +1 food to city" and it won't cast on the city.

Click on your sovereign and open the tab named "Enchants" next to the "Vitals" and "Actions" tab. There you see all the spells that drain your essence, summoned creatures and city enchantments alike.
