Creating new units vs upgrading existing designs

At the start of the game (1.01), I went to design a new unit. There are two weapons available, a club that gives 2 attack, and a staff that gives 3.

When I design a new unit, it has the same attack as the weapon - 2 with club, 3 with staff. But when I upgrade the basic Peasant design, it has 1 more (3 with club, 4 with staff), the extra point is explained as "base attack". Is it a bug that when you design a new unit there is no "base attack" or I'm missing something? Also when upgrading the Peasant the Travelling Boots are available, but when creating a new units they aren't - sounds like another bug.

I also have some other questions:

1. How does the Vengeance Coating work?

2. Do the Scout Pack and Messenger Pack have any effect other than the extra stats?

3. Is it a feature or a bug that a unit can have more than one pack?

Had the same question myself.

I'm not sure if it's consider a bug but some of the base units are slightly more powerful than custom ones.

How does the Vengeance Coating work?

I'd really like to know myself because at the moment it doesn't seem to be doing anything. I thought I had to activate it in combat but nope.

How does this make sense at all? It's a bug.

Yes this is a good question.

Any one know?

The extra stats/equipment options after upgrading have to be bugs, else there's no point in ever creating a custom unit from scratch.

As far as I know, those two packs are just extra stats - this is really something that needs to be better documented though, as some packs (pioneer, for example), do give extra effects, and some are just stats. And multiple packs is clearly a feature until a patch that declares it a bug and fixes it :P

IIRC it's the same as the ability - it boost damage when you counter attack.

I've noticed the same issues with default units vs. user created. o_O

Also; I tried a game as Resolyn last night and their faction bonus of +10 hp to all units only works for peasants.  It seemed like a big bonus for the whole faction so I'm not sure if it is a bug or not.

I'd like to know why and how the game gave me Peasants with 13 hp and Observers with 5 hp. The only equipment difference I could see was the staff/club.
