[Solution] Out of memory

[Solution] Out of memory

ATI video card users running Windows 7 64-bit need to update to the latest (post July 2010) video drivers. There is a bug in the pre-July drivers that causes a large memory leak.

To add to others, I have noticed that the sound effects for Elemental disappear shortly before I get an OOM crash.  I still have ambient sounds, but combat sounds are gone and, if I am not mistaken, music as well.

Not for me.  I've been on 10-7 for weeks, having typical issues like white backgrounds in tactical battles.   Just updated to 10-8 and had the same thing.

Is there a way to get a refund.. Don't get me wrong its a good game but what good is a game that I cant play for more than a few turns.... I'll probably just wait a month or two or try it again but in the mean time I would like the money to spend :p

Went to 10.8 and things actually got weirder in the game--my mouse cursor turns invisible while moving around any game screen if I use the Elemental cursor. Hardware cursor is perfectly visible. So, if anything, 10.8 made my game worse.

I got an out of memory crash about 295 turns in with 1.5gb of usage. Didn't manage to catch the error files, but I'll try to post any further crashes I get tonight.

yah so i tested it with new drivers using a 5700 and it played alot longer but i think thats due to the fact that my home system has more ram then my system at work i have 8 gigs here and 4 gigs at work anyways i was able to play game from 10 pm to 12:30 am and then i got the out of memory error.

the drivers I am using are the beta drivers that I guess came out on the 25th ?

I am still getting these OOM issues, and I'm running Nvidio Geforce 8600M GT on Windows Vista Home Premium SP 2 (with all patches and updates for graphic cards and OS).

Animations and sound go away, then I'll get OOM error/crash.

Also, the game almost always blows up on exit, and just accessing the main menu or starting a new game in the same session after 20 to 30 minutes of play is enough to cause the game to blow up as well. So all the memory/resource issues that were in beta 98 are still present.

and another OOM from me with 10.8 I got to turn 160, but noticed after tha ram use got to 1.5gb that the settler & caravan trianing buttons were black.

in my experience the ooms in the beta were about the 100 turn point, so the release versions have improved the situation by 60 turns, BUT compaerd with the 32bit oom situation getting 300+ turns before oom in the beta it is slow improvement not enough to claim fixed, more like one hole patched, but still looking for many others.

one thought from the sins optimization mods tricks to improve the ram use in sins & expansions is that the models MIGHT have errors in the faces/polys &/or materials that might be the cause of the graphical leak appearances.

Out of memory error with Catalyst 10.8 (newest), sound had stopped working a bit before that.

Just wanted to confirm that I am also having this issue on Vista 64 with an ATI card (since all the talk has been about Win 7 64).

My drivers are definitely out of date, but I am hesitant to update since it sounds like people with the latest ones are having more issues than me, not less. I am not having any graphical corruption issues or things like that, just the OOM crash every 100-150 turns or so. With autosave working fine it doesn't bother me that much. I don't really trust ATI that much when they say their latest and greatest will fix issues, based on past experience.

Incidently, the only other stability issue I am having is the alt-tab DX crash.

I'll try to get you some debug logs next time it happens so you have more useful data.

I also still get OOM messages with Cata 10.8

Its all good tough i run dual screen, On my right monitor i have the resource monitor open. When Elemental Approch 1400 mb i just save exit and reopen. Gives me another hour of playtime :D

Just thought I'd chime in here and say that I'm having the same OOM issue as well. The game crashes about every 2 hours.

AMD Athlon 64 X2 6000

Vista 64bit SP2

4GB RAM

ATI Radeon 5870

the updated drivers beta that came out on the 25th dont work do not fix issue is this issue with just 64 bit systems OS stuff ?

I also have the issues with ram & sound dieing about 2-4 turns before OOM with the latest drivers, but am able to play for a lot longer on 32bit, so from my limited testing it appears to be a ram leak relating to memory allocation request  to OS and not release by requestor, and as 64bit OS supplies twice the ram address space per request due to 64bit vs 32bit the 64bit OS computers will see it far sooner that the 32bit OS computers.

each of the patches(elemental patch added about 40 turns the catalyst update about 20 turns on a fresh game) but at about turn 160 in a game on 64 bit the load of a savegame hits 1.5gb and ooms on the next turn.

Same issues, (OOM error, sounds cut out 1-2 minutes before the crash) same "bleeding edge" specs:

Windows 7

AMD 1090T 64-bit 6 core, 3.2GHz

9GB RAM

ATI HD5450 1GB

Game, when first launched, consumes about 900MB of memory. When the sound cuts out, a quick check in task manager showed over 1.4GB of memory consumed. First thought was maybe Win7 only allocates 1/6th the total memory for each of the 6 CPU cores and the game only runs on a single core...

EDIT: From the dates of the previous posters, it looks like they may have been running earlier versions of the game? To be clear, I'm running the (currently) latest patch release 1.06.

Kudos to the ongoing work, the tech system is certainly more streamlined now, although there are still work to do. And the cities names are still mixed up on occasions. But most importantly, I am still having the OOM error as of today. Crashed on me multiple times today.

My Spec is

Window 7 64 Bit

Intel i7 Core Q720

Nvidia Geforce GTX 260M

4GB RAM

It seems that most of us are using Windows 7 64 bit. Is that one of the cause of error?

ooms even happen on xp32 bit, so no win7 64 bit is NOT the cause, my opinion is that there aer ram leaks involving the sound code and the animations code, but that is just my opinion

Yep, I get this on XP 32 bit, too.

I can usually use an autosave from a few turns before, but the strange thing is, that the "Out of memory" crash makes my computer restart. 0o wtf?

I also often get a re-boot(BSD type restart) with a crash of 1.11 on xp32 bit also, BUT on win7 64bit no reboots yet

Just got this error for the second time. Win7x64, 6GB RAM, ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3650, Core 2 Duo @ 2.66GHz.
