[Solution] Out of memory

[Solution] Out of memory

ATI video card users running Windows 7 64-bit need to update to the latest (post July 2010) video drivers. There is a bug in the pre-July drivers that causes a large memory leak.

Note: If you have an ATI card with Win 7 64-bit (and WinVista 64) you need to update your ATI drivers to the latest version. This should solve the memory issue.

It didn't solve the issue. AFAIK 10.7 is the latest set of drivers for ATI cards, both of my Win 7 64 rigs are running ATI cards (a 5870 and a 5650m), both with latest drivers, and both frequently get out of memory errors. I've posted numerous debug.err files, they're all pretty similar both pre and post patch.

The latest ATI driver for 64 bit is Catalyst 10.7

People are still having crashes with it, the point is however that this only happens in Elemental. I haven't had a reported out of memory crash in any other game. It makes no sense to blame this on ATI and tell people to do a driver update because there is no driver to fix this!

Also got an OOM after about 4 hours of play.

Win7 64

Core i7 860

Radeon 5850 - Catalyst 10.7 drivers

No overheating - temps are normal

Would appreciate a 64bit version of the game, so that even if there is a memory leak, it would have to exhaust my 8gb ram + additional swap before OOM :D

frogboy, I have been using the latest catalyst version (10.7) with beta 4 and on and posting EACH of the OOMS, and also have been having them with lower frequency on a winxp 32bit with nvidia so I do not think it is a driver issue, but is more likely to be a memory not de-allocating issue either in elemental, or between elemental & havok or elemental & sound OR even a three way issue between elemental, havok & the sound library, as in one game I disabled the sound ingame (this was with beta 4b) and was able to play for longer( about 50%) but was only a single test so merely have anecdotal opinion.

my average time to oom on w764bit is approx 100 turns (1.05.16) did give me 140 turns, but my average time to OOM on winxp 32bit with nvidia is 350 turns, NOTE both are on large maps with 4 competeing kingdom/empire(s). my thoughts as to the difference in time to oom between xp & win7 64bit is that 64 bit windows when requested to allocate ram gives twice the ram that 32bit windows does due to the 32bit & 64bit arcetectural differences.

My ATI drivers are the latest... the only ones you can get are the 10.7 Catalyst from July 26/10... same issue with out of memory (occasonally as usually i just crash to desktop with a program stopp responding error)

Thanks for all the debug.err files and specs, guys...this is obviously one of the big ones, so we're on the case ;)

Just to throw my weight in here... Im runnin win 7 pro 32 bit.. not 64. Ill try and max out my memory again, but to get around it and get my elemental fix i just increased my memory to 8 gigs... lol

Edit: also running an ATI HD 4870 with latest drivers. Just reinstalled windows and everything so I'm solid on the driver front.

This is very welcome news!

I don't mean to impose but could you describe what the problem is exactly and when we can (expect to) get back to playing again?

Thank you very much for your time and support!

Is there any news? I'd love to play again, I've really enjoyed the game so far until it started crashing. :)

Mine keeps crashing with win7 x64, Geforce GTX 260M.  The problem (for me) may be lack of device drivers since my HD died recently and I haven't reinstalled everything yet.  Not sure how to post the error reports though.

I am getting these OOM's like crazy.

My specs are: Intel® Core™ i7-920 Processor 2.66 ghz

GeForce GTX 260 vid and Win 7 64bit

12 gigs of ram

this is happening with my system and i have a nvidia card as well. i will send some dump files when i get a chance. The memory error is only happening to a non-campaign game, around 115+ turns. i can load the game and maybe get a turn or two in before crashing and getting the error again.

Also, in campaign mode at exactly turn 1050 the game becomes unresponsive to almost everything. it doesnt crash but i cannot click anything in the UI. i can go to the menu screen and exit that way or load a different game. If i load a previous game it will work fine until that turn. It seems to be running as expected before that... I havent tried restarting the campaign yet but i am going to. Not sure if this is related but it seems like some type of memory glitch.

win 7 64

Geforce gtx285 1gb

Core Duo q9550 2.8

8gb ram

elemental v1.5

just rebuilt so all drivers are up to date.

i know this is a vague discription but i dont have time to be specific and will try and get windows logs and elemental logs uploaded asap.

I hope this helps and am looking forward to a polished game soon.

I noticed mine seems to get the out of memory error the most when I go to the main menu and reload a game (when I have already been playing one).  I also have a GeForce 8600 GT card, not an ATI card.

kyro, the fact that we have nvidia people getting ooms suggests it is an unresolved memory leak either in elemental or between elemental, havok and the sound system.

I am suggesting the sound system as I had played a single game back in beta 4 with sound off and it did get further than s similar game with sound on, and also havok might have a compatability issue with the ati drivers which the 64bit amplifies.

I just got one. I notice the phrase

Debug Message: WARNING: Caravan Caravan has trade cities set, but for some reason has no directive!! Continuing on to our next city to try to get on track again

Shows up several times every turn.

So for those of us living on the bleeding edge, the ATI site does not have the 10.8 ATI graphics driver available for download on its own. You have to download the software suite (its ok, you can just unselect the other apps in the installer) but yeah a lot of us are on 10.7 thinking it is the latest because of this little oversight.
