availability in Europe

It's my understanding that the game will never be available in europe? is that a bad joke ? :D

I don't wanna sound like a m*r*n but do you seriously expect Europeans to buy it in the state and gladly pay the shipping + custom taxes ;) ?

On the bright side, I would like to believe that there's something planned or an alternative or what have you... there is one, is there not?

Unfortunately, no, Europe is not getting a retail release. It was explained that due to all the overhead, SD ends up making about $1 per box sold in Europe, compared to $30 in the US.

You can always buy digital download, though.

I'm really not keen on steam and such like... I guess I'll buy a retail box next time I'm in the US and I'll hide it in my luggage :)
look what you've turned me into : a petty criminal!

Thanks for your prompt answer tho

I suspect there are some tax related reasons behind this. I believe you guys have greater taxes then we do here in the West.

Save yourself a plane ticket (which are quite expensive) and get the digital download :P

Well, I purchased the game this morning and it was 38 Euro for the download. The boxed version would have added about 16 Euro for the shipping. I don't know if there would have been an additional import tax. That's 54 Euro total. Now, if I purchase a game at my game store here in Germany, most new releases sell for an average of 40-45 Euro, plus 3 Euro for shipping. The price difference isn't all that high (unless there is an additional import tax), if you want the box.

I'd have bought the boxed version if there had been a thick, printed manual, but since that doesn't seem to be the case I'm all right with the plain download version. Although deep down I'm wondering a little if I should get the upgrade to the boxed CE version, but looking at all the CEs of more than two decades of gaming that do nothing but collect dust on my shelves, I keep trying to tell myself that it's simply not necessary and that I need to outgrow that attachment to material goods! ;)

But I still think it's a shame that the game doesn't get a retail release in Europe. The market for TBS PC titles seems to be much bigger here. Many of the notable TBS games in the more recent years came from European and Russian studios and publishers. With the digital publishing, availability isn't the issue, but there's a chance for publicity and exposure missed. (And while I will run Impulse just for Stardock's games, I'm really not fond of having to run additional software to play a game, which is why I still don't use Steam. You need Impulse even if you get the boxed version, so you might as well get the download edition.)

I bought it with Impulse (download). Calculated price is larger then normal box premiere relases in my country, but cheaper thet e.g. SC2.

I always prefer digital anyway, I don't have room for all these boxes anymore. With Elemental though I would've wanted to have the collectors edition. After some math it would've costed around 100 euros with shipping and customs. That makes into what, 130-140 dollars? Yeah so, the digital it was.

You'd need to use Impulse to download patches and updates anyway, so why not just buy digitally?

Hmm, maybe because having to DL ~2 GB (if I've read correctly) if you get a bad connection that leaves you with say 30KB/s download speed really sux? Just a thought... ;)

I saw the boxed version on amazon.com the other day and thought about purchasing it. But now after reading several threads about bugs and an obviously pretty let's put it politely and say "lacking" pdf manual I'm gonna wait at least three patches and a well filled wiki or some useful getting started guides before even considering the purchase. Wouldn't have the time to play atm anyway.

Just noticed thread. This explains why when I walk into my local pc game retailer, ask for Elemental or release dates they look at me like i'm from planet Zog! ( I am but I thought my disguise was good!) :cylon:

Mmmmm I'm gonna have to buy it as a DL.

Happy world Domination!

I used to read so many anti-Steam threads and it kinda made me a bit anti digital download too, but then I got Impulse for EWOM and Steam for Civ V and I pleasantly found they're not so evil after all!

They are not evil. :P And the anti-Steam threads are more about you buying your singleplayer game in a retail store and being forced to install from Steam, for example. Or "The Monopoly Menace". XD

What is evil is that of regional locks. And those are not the fault of the digital stores but of the publishers.
