Help creating archers

Need some guidance on how to make archers....

I've researched some weapons and it said that I could make archers, but there I can't train archers. I also can't build a training area for archers.  If someone could walk through the technology and buildings one needs to make arechers that would help. (Also, how to do a squad of archers too. Is it logistics?)

After saving the game and trying a few combinations out, I figured it out. You need to get to weapons, Archery, and Armor.  (The Armor was my problem). BUT how do you make a group of archers, say 6 or so?

That's how you get the pre-made archer unit, but once you have the archer tech you can just design a unit with a bow.

I think the research for that is called "squads" or something like that. It's in the Warfare line. When you go to train units, you can pick how many you want in the group once you have the tech unlocked.

Once you have the items and research to make archers, you need to design a new unit. I'm at work right now, but IIRC there's a button to do that in the kingdom report screen. Call it "My Archer" or some such, and then give him a bow and any other items you want. You can then train guys like that using the normal unit training command.

It's pretty neat once you understand what to do, but it's confusing at first that you have to design the unit before you can train it.

The designing of ships in Gal Civ before you build them tripped me up when I first started playing that...

As soon as you have a bow you can design a unit with a bow, just go into the unit designer from the empire screen. The same applies for any other weapon or equipment.

To train multiples of a group you need to unlock them. Logistics is the first and allows you to recruit parties of units (4). To recruit a party, on the training window for a city you have two rows of icons at the top, the one on the left is size and the one on the right is experience (unlocked with research into training). As you unlock further buttons will become available.

Check the tech descriptions and you'll see the ones you need to unlock the various group / experience options. Though note costs and training time increase.

Also, for those who haven't realised yet - any NPC in friendly territory can buy their own equipment from those you have unlocked (you can even purchase mounts without having the relevant resource from the market), just look for the market button on their actions (looks like a pile of gold). Giving them some weapons and armour is generally a good idea if they're going to get into a fight :)

Thanks for the great responses. But I have a few questions.  I just picked archer units to produce without "designing" them. Are they weaker? (they seem to miss a lot in combat).  Does designing a unit make them stronger?

To be able to produce a unit (even premade ones), you MUST have the tech required for them (just like in GalCiv II). Once you get better bows, you can make archers with those better bows (and upgrade your existing archers I think.)

The units you design will be as powerful as high your Warfare tech is. Upgrade bows and research squads to increase their damage & hitpoints.

Nope, apart from peasants (who get a hitpoint bonus) there's no difference between the predesigned units and a designed unit that I'm aware of, their stats are all down to the equipment. IIRC however the pre-designed archers are equipped with shortbows which has a low attack. If your designed unit is using longbows that would be why - their attack would be higher than the predesigned unit.
