Low graphical performance over various 3D objects from the map

Low graphical performance over various 3D objects from the map

I actually noticed this during beta 4, but it was the first time I noticed buildings, on my new laptop, so I thought they just needed some optimizing, which would be done for the release.

I get a constant max framerate (limited to 90 in my case, for example) over all the map, on a bare ground, units for example are ok. But as soon as a small 3D object enters the field, it decreases. A tree in the corner? 45 fps. A city (not a big one, just the first settlement) visible? 15 fps.

I tried to change the various settings, deactivated soft lighting, AA, shadows, resolution, it's still doing the same. It works good on the cloth map, without a problem, though, as there are no such elements.

Now I would understand such thing on my older laptop, but I'm surprised to see this on the new one. Specs:

Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM) i7 CPU Q 720 @ 1.60GHz (8 CPUs), ~1.6GHz
Memory: 8192MB RAM
Video Card: ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5870
Operating System: Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit

So I'm guessing there is somehow a problem with drivers (though latest ones from ATI), or at least some incompatibility somewhere. Because the objects are nice, the cell shading effect too, but it's hardly something to bring this computer to its knees.

ps: I understand that a game like this doesn't need to run at 90fps. But 15-20 is actually unpleasant on the long term.

Edit: To make a complete (more or less) analysis, I tried at a high and low configuration, similar effects:

LOW Settings:

- Video Configuration

- Over a city: 20 fps

- Without objects: 138 fps

HIGH Settings:

High settings - city

- Video Configuration

- Over a city: 18 fps

- Without objects: 80 fps

So it doesn't seem to be related to the video settings. I also tried windowed, same.

It is really related to these 3D objects, as shown by these two other screenshots:

- Full zoom, empty ground: 99 fps

- Same place, just a bit higher to have one tree in the view: 29 fps

So far, the only thing which seems to improve performance is to force the game to run only on one core (physical one, so two virtual cores on Core i3/5/7), as suggested by thebigJ_A in this answer.

It should be the other way around, clearly, so maybe it's giving a hint on where the problem could be. Note that this doesn't solve the performance problem, there is still a big decrease on framerate when passing on cities, but less than when the game is authorized to run on all cores. I noticed however that doing this since the 1.05 version makes the sound choppy, probably because it was expecting to run on a different core to begin with.

I have the same issue. Getting about 5 - 10 Fps when there are a lot of 3d objects on the screen this get's really noticable after a while when your cities get bigger and you have a lot of them.

My system

Intel C2D P7450 @ 2.13 GHZ

4096 MB DDR3 1333 MHZ

Windows 7 Prof.

ATI HD 4650 1 gb version newest driver.

Quoting PsiRedEye22, reply 274My issue is a trite different, since hardware doesn't seem to be the problem, I won't even bother posting it:

If I wait around long enough after the game starts, the game actually runs flawlessly. However, when I come into contact with a person or trigger a tutorial, my framerate instantly drops down to 1-2 FPS, causing me to wait for this drop to finish. Rinse and repeat for pretty much every turn.

If the issue seems different, report it in another thread, to keep things more or less clean.

This thread is about the low framerate happening on the regular map, when a city or another 3D object is visible. If your issue is different, don't report it here.
End of Gnoupi's quote

Actually there is many posts in this thread in general about low fps happening in game on a consent bases.  And stardock has posted they are looking into it.

Hold on a minute: you mean if we're getting lousy performance, it's because our graphics card isn't being used in the 3D view?  Am I understanding this correctly?

Yea so it seems, some times in tactical battles the GPU is at 40% but on the main map its around 1-3% often 0%
End of AnjinSan1966's quote

Huh... in that case I'm actually kind of impressed that my computer runs the game as well as it does considering that it's currently CPU bound... and I have an Athlon XP 2600+ !  All this time I just assumed i was getting lousy performance because my computer should be in the Smithsonian next to the vacuum tube display.  But if they get the GPU and LOD situation resolved, there's a chance I might actually be able to play with the 3D view.  Crazy.

Ahh... I didn't see this thread when I posted earlier on the other thread.  Glad to see it's not just me with the performance issues.  Stardock, love what you are doing here and the game has monumental potential. But this really needs to be a priority over AI, spells enhancements and really everything else.  The game needs tp be stable and playable otherwise nothing else matters (not to quote Metallica).

1.06 didn't help performance for me, but it's good that other bugs are being fixed. The GPU is being used, just only 1% of it is being used on the main 3D map. I get up to 50 % of the GPU being used during tactical battles with FPS of 45 to 50. It also appears that Elemental does not support crossfire as my 2nd GPU load was 0 % and the clock speeds were in power saving mode.

It would be at least nice to know if Stardock can reproduce the problem on their office computers ...

it looks like i get a much better performance on tactical battles now. like perfect. but still the performance on 3d map is bad.

i think I might be done with this game if there's no fix..that would be a shame. i've just never seen anything like this, and something that was supposed to work well for even low end systems, nonetheless. cruel, cruel irony.

Maybe we need to get 3-year-old Thinkpads? :p

No seriously, I'm glad they've said they're looking into this, and that they communicate as much as they do. Since tactical battles work as intended (GPU doing something) then they should have some understanding of the issue. It's most likely not just 'check what the difference is and fix', but surely it should be something rather discrete, I can't believe that it's at the core of the engine or something like that. I guess this issue affects everyone?

is everyone seeing improved fps during tactical battles now? Allthough my fps does improve during tactical battles im not seeing amazing frame rates Im getting around 30fps.

1.06 didn't seem to do much for me.  I've still got good FPS in tactical/cloth map/on the map when a city isn't anywhere near by.  I'm hoping they fix this soon, since I really do like the game (what I've been able to play of it), but playing at 10 fps or lower isn't very fun.

What I can't believe is that such a widespread and disruptive bug wasn't caught during the beta, especially with so many people pointing it out.

For me the tactical battles are around 30-40 fps and on the Worldmap it starts at 60fps but as soon as u build 1 town it drops to 35fps.

And then its downhill to 6fps as in my last game and then the OOM msg and Elemental just stops responding.

This is in windowed mode with all settings @ default.

Same problem here with 1.06. Slow framerate over 3d objects. Fine otherwise.

I can't believe that it's at the core of the engine or something like that. I guess this issue affects everyone?

What I can't believe is that such a widespread and disruptive bug wasn't caught during the beta, especially with so many people pointing it out.
End of db0's quote

Ditto.  I supported Stardock by pre-ordering this game, but this seems like a pretty huge bug to release with.  Supposedly others pointed it out during beta and it leaves me wondering how this could've slipped by.

Well, I'm a sucker for good stories, and I was kind of enjoying the campaign's,  but once I got to the swamp(Tarth) with two farms (of which one doesn't trigger an encounter) (supposed to be three farms?) I got around 9fps.(This is with core affinity set to one core.) In tactical battles in the swamp (the two I found) I got around 14fps. My HD4870 was doing pirouettes out of boredom in the background. When I moved around, the hd crunched for a split second, then my army teleported in two stutters. Alas, my machine had still not turned into a netbook.

Debug Message:  LEAK: CTexturePainterBuffer: Empire_Tree_Large_Card_Status_Bar_2_state_3_6069_Buffer (335DFAA8) leaked with 1 refs
Debug Message:  LEAK: CTexturePainterBuffer: Empire_Tree_Large_Card_Image_state_1_6070_Buffer (33AC7748) leaked with 1 refs
Debug Message:  IDirect3D9 object not cleared; 864 ref counts still remaining.

DebugMessage:  Main Shell terminating normally

Does that mean that there are 864 allocated memory spaces that can no longer be reached (no reference - mem leak) , or that that there are references to memory spaces that have been cleared (useless references), or that there are references to allocated memory spaces that are still there, non-taken care of? Or is the saggy performance due to the game writing debug messages to the log like a game possessed by evil spirits? (Nope, making debug.err write-protected has no influence on fps)

(Can't seem to imbue the champion, (and why is that spell Death magic?) can't even equip her, can't find all farms - these things become meaningless if the game speed feels like nwn2 in extra tar.)

Gambit, in future please don't just post your entire dxdiag. Noone want's to scroll through that whole thing! Upload it somewhere and post a link!

(although it is kind of funny to see the symbols converted to smilies, lol)

Hmmm. This is really getting frustrating!

I'm reluctantly going to be putting Elemental aside until this issue is resolved. Just waaaaaaay to painful.

Sorry to say it, but despite the assurances this game really wasn't 'ready' for launch. :(

Shame, because there is so much to like about it.

Has there been any indication yet from the devs that the source of the problem has been located? Just trying to get a mental ETA of when I should check back in. Hours, Days, Weeks?

Would like to add that I'm facing this issue as well on my Alienware M11xR2 (core i5-520UM, 4GB RAM, Nvidia 335M). Using the 258.96 optimus drivers so verified that the 335M is indeed kicking in when this game is running.

Getting 8-10fps over a city and 40+fps over empty land or the fog of war areas. Turning up or down the gfx settings does nothing for me. Setting the CPU affinity also does nothing.

Getting frustrated with the choppy frame rates so I didn't progress very far.
End of Shmutt's quote

1.06 seems to have fixed the performance issue for me. Now, viewing a 3D map over a city (I just have 1 for now) gets me the same fps as anywhere else on the map. Didn't feel any slowdowns as compared to before! :D

Long thread, someone linked me here from the thread I created in regards to noticing that the game is only using 1 core fully and 1 other core ~20%. Has anyone mentioned this yet because that would seem to be a big cause for the slow downs, especially when you're up into the hundreds of turns in a game.

I did some testing by setting the affinity for the program from 6 cores and iterated down to 1 core, and there was literally no performance difference. Maybe someone at Stardock forgot to enable multi-threading in their game, or it's just not coded for multi-threading?

Well, i guess there isn't much to do but wait and hope this problem will get fixed. IDK bout you guys but i am actually quite enjoying playing on cloth map :), its not that bad (put aside the countless crashes which i only get with the updated game, so i play with version 1.0 to avoid having crashes) , the tactical part of the game is still 3D and it works fine. Sure its great to play on 3D map without a prob , i look forward to the time when they fix the issue (if they will ever fix it). For those who don't like cloth map option, i suggest to have some patience :)

Around turn 500 last night the enemy invaded me and the game dropped to 5fps including tactical battles...sound went out, troops disappeared, etc etc. No improvements from restarting the saved. The game is completely unplayable near endgame. End turns stutter and take forever to complete. It feels like there is so much going on behind the hood the game just can't handle it.

Pleased to report that codecritter is making good progress on this internally. Hopefully everything will test out with it so we can include the changes with the next update. :)

Thanks for info. You have no idea how much the stress levels drop when you guys post - even if it isn't anything conclusive. :)

Next update won't be today though, will it?

That's fantastic news. I want to be able to finish a game....i haven't been able to yet. :(
