How NOT to do an early release

I like how you had this all typed out, mouse hovering over the Post Thread button, waiting for the release.

I may sound like a crybaby, but I gotta say telling people the game will release the week before (I think Brad originally mentioned Wednesday) and then changing that to Sunday or Monday, and then finally saying Sunday morning or midday (depending on whether you participated in the Beta or not) but making it live late Sunday night (it's still earlyish here in NM but those poor people back east are already in bed or should be!) is just kind of pathetic.

And I don't mean we SHOULD get it early. I agree, it's just a bonus and I appreciate it. But don't tell me it will be early when you're not sure. If you don't really know what sort of issues you might run into, then don't even bother mentioning it. I'm just glad I was gone all day today and wasn't waiting around for it. I made the mistake of sitting at my computer tonight for two or more hours looking for it. I won't do that again.

So while I'm glad it's now downloading, I sure wish it had happened earlier in the weekend so I could have spent a few hours playing Elemental before heading back to work tomorrow.

Shut up. They were only being nice because the fucking street date got broken.

X( Yep...what a waste of a post...be grateful you're getting it early in the first place.

Frogboy & Team - thanks for the tremendous effort and getting this to us early, you guys/gals ROCK!

some folks would complain if ya game them a solid gold toilet sheesh..

hopefully the day 0 patch isn't delayed as a result..... 36ish hours to go until that, and as you see, it takes time to roll out a new build.

well if it hurts you soo much just wait until Tuesday for the actual release and then download it.

Ever considered that the guys might actually be just as excited about this whole deal as the 600 guys carpet-bombing the IRC chatroom this very moment?

Screw professional/cynical marketing wisdom - go the passion.

It's easy to be a fanboy. Try being critical for a change instead of just giving Brad and his crew a free ticket. You have no problem criticizing me...

That's because your criticisms are inane, whereas Brad's efforts have been pretty Herculean over the last few days.

OP does have a point. I'm super stoked that we get this game early, and i'd be just as excited if we all had to wait till Tuesday, but when the devs tell you it'll be out at a certain time, that lends itself to consumer expectations. and anytime expectations are not met, things get a little ugly. personally, i cleared my schedule for today on the word that preorders would get the game around midday. it wasn't a big deal, but i ended up with a pretty boring afternoon. again, not a huge deal, but its not how i WANTED to spend my Sunday.

that said, Stardock has clearly put in alot of effort to get this going as fast as possible, and i think everyone really appreciates that. I know I do.

Good rule of thumb is to be kind.

Things go a little off from what someone stated - be kind. Stardock was benig kind to us by going in on a Sunday.

You are whinning because you had to wait and people who rightfully call you out you call fanboys?  The time of ADD is alive and well, stop bein ajerk and just enjoy what you have in your me first world.

I actually agree, it would be better if Frogboy'd been more ambiguous in his statements - instead of saying "you'll get it at __" say it might be available then, and that's when he was shooting for. But it's not like we don't know what sort of issues were going on, and we really can't blame him for a late early release. After all, we're still getting access before the game is actually out.

Well I didn't see the updates about it being released on Sunday.  Last I read it was Monday, so I'm happy :)

This did screw me up though, because I was gonna be on here in 10 minutes posting "Ok, it's Monday now, so where's the gold?"  Dammit...

 TY, Stardock!

Look, it may not look like it, but I wasn't trying to start a flame war. I should have known people here would forgive Stardock all their sins even though it is their business to produce games, they chose to work their asses off to make this date, etc.

My whole point was this:

As a consumer, someone who spent not only $50 on the game, but then an additional $30 for the LE version, and have spent about an additional $100 on Stardock products this month alone (having never spent a penny on any of their products before!) I would have appreciated a developer with a little more transparency. I appreciate the early release, but I wished they'd not promised it even earlier than tonight.

I have been developing software for 20 years and I know it's a thankless, awful job sometimes. And I am glad when someone appreciates my work. But I also don't promise something I can't deliver. But we all make mistakes. Absolutely.

The street date was what we all signed up for when we ordered it, and compared to that we still did get it early.

In the future, Stardock will probably be a little more cautious when announcing an early release.  I don't think I'm alone in checking Impulse with (almost?) OCD frequency throughout the day.  People will get irked.  Should they get really upset about that?  Probably not, but they will nonetheless, and this is not something Stardock wants a rep for.

As far as I can tell (haven't played yet, finishing install) the launch went alright.  Unforseen glitches happen.  Think of all the craziness that comes up in your job and think if you had thousands of fanboys and fangirls waiting on you to finish something.  I am 100% positive the Elemental crew wanted this out ASAP, but they didn't want to turn out a glitchy launch, so they worked their butts off on a Sunday, missing time with their families and some baseball games.  They tried darned hard, so I'd say nix the grousing, play the game, and get worked up only if this is a repeat problem.

Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to set up a kingdom and do some mad air guitar.

Complaining about an early release?  Really?  Really?

Hey you get it before the release date... so its not as early as you wanted, im sure 90% of the people here would have loved to get it months ago if it was possible :P they never said how early, just early. These things do take time.
