Elemental: Game Play Example – Part 3

Elemental: Game Play Example – Part 3

Previously: https://forums.elementalgame.com/390950

…A month has passed…

While the Thief turned King prepares his strike on the Fallen Empire of Yithril, he has also had to deal with the rising power of a local Bandit Lord.  Their first incursion is met by the growing power of Capitar.

image

Roland came prepared. With a party of archers and observers (along with Janusk and “Muggles”) the Brigands would find that Resolve was not easy prey.

image

image

imageThe Bandits would learn a harsh lesson.

The Thief and the Weaver

Roland was no stranger when it came to dealing with the fairer sex. But since his epiphany in which he turned away his life robbery, he had focused his time on building up his kingdom.

But when he met Raline, his world was changed.

imageimageimage

Janusk the Scribe recognized the importance of the meeting immediately.

“Sire, it is said that Channeling can be inherited. If you truly love her then perhaps a union can be made that will, in time, bear children.”

image

The Kingdom had become reasonably prosperous and Roland’s fame had grown to the point that his reputation was now high enough that most families would consent to their daughters marrying him. In short, Roland had become respectable.

image

image

“Janusk, my friend, I would like you to escort the queen back to Resolve. There she will be safe.”

Janusk was wary of leaving his lord’s sire but obeyed.

image

As a wedding gift, Raline bought Roland new equipment for battle. “I’ll feel better knowing you’re not running around like some Brigand.”

“Heh,” said Roland. “Yea, those Brigands.”

“Which reminds me, why do you continue to wear that head band? The highway men in the western wastes wear those. Where would you even get one?”

“Oh, yea, that. I just like the look of it.”

Without further discussion, Roland left for war.

Verga Arrives

image

image

8 months after leaving for war, Roland’s forward scouts had spotted Verga. What they saw made them tremble in fear. Verga, unlike Roland, had obviously found midnight stones and had them forged into a mighty weapon. He had also equipped himself with superior armor.

While Roland had a summoned bear, Verga had summoned a Stone Giant.  He also had quite a few soldiers with him.

Deciding to withdraw, Roland found the way behind him had become increasingly dangerous. The no-man’s land between Yithril and Capitar was rapidly filling with monsters of increasing lethality.

It would take another 3 months to get home.

image

The long trip back would bring welcome news…

imageimage   In 18 or so years, Sandra would become a powerful Sorceress.  That is, if the kingdom of Capitar survived that long.

On the Offense…

image Now it was my turn to strike back.

The battle for Yithril…

image

image

Verga himself was not present. But his son was in the battle.

image  Muggles, our long companion was gone. But Roland was victorious.

Conquest

The destruction of the main Yithril army meant that Haru was largely defenseless and would fall.

image

The War between Yithril and Capitar would span a decade…

One by one, Yithril’s cities were conquered.

And new allies would be brought on board.

image

imageimage

They told Roland of a new Empire to be aware of…Umber.

image

Roland would send an emissary to learn more about Umber. Who were they? Were they friendly?

imageThe situation was not looking promising…

…To be continued…

Yes, where was Verga with that badass sword of his? That unit looked like it could do some serious damage.

Did your city get any heat at all, besides those two observers that killed your pioneer?

And btw, they are not Archers, if they are packing crossbows ;)

I also noticed that Tarth's units on the diplomactic screen were way more valued than your own units... I take it those were NPC adventure types with some serious XP behind them. It's good to know you can trade for those types of units, but it won't be easy to steal them on the cheap.

</Quote>

The AI probably values them so high, because it has only those 2 heroes.. if it had 20 they would probably be much cheaper.

These are good questions that suggest a way forward for the dynastic system.  I would love for pregnant women to have to be kept safe during their pregnancy (it would be like a mini-game of sorts).

Omg no mini games. Throwing in mini games to add "depth" to games does not.
Mini games are arbitrary, repetitious, and time consuming; look at spore... it is a giant clusterfuck of mini games and it fails harder than titanium steel.
End of Circumstantial's quote

Depends on the mini-games and how they work with the world. Look at Sid Meier's Pirates! That game has several mini-games tucked into a single game, and the flow is excellent.

I feel that greenish Muggles may become new mascot for the game...

Despite all of that, I predict that the AI will still kick my butt.  I love strategy games, but I'm not very good at them.
End of Mtn_Man's quote

I'm unfortunately really good at strategy games, and it makes me wonder if I was a Napoleon or Alexander in my past life. The only strategy game to really make it tough for me was an old school Civilization game cranked up to a very hard difficulty. The next one would be either the original Shogun Total War and Medieval Total War 1, but only if I came under attack against a maxed star general while I only had a 1 star with peasants. I won't get into the whole downfall of AI difficulty concerning the latest installments of Total War, even on hardest difficulty it's a cakewalk.

As for EWoM, it's probably best to just use generic soldiers to pad the enemy AI cities for the time being, that's a preset amount that it automatically creates and will stand and guard the city.

1. Its an entry in the hierge.... book , so its not ment to contsantly update. Its pic that appears on his 'card', when you update your sov the card stays  the same.

Which personally I find to be a problem, because so many of the poses require weapons to look right, and it really sucks to have them never have a weapon in their hand in the pic or constantly have a club.

It should really update to whatever weapon they're using.
End of Lord_Asmodeous's quote

I am hoping and guessing that more equipment will be avalible at the start. The archer pose is redundant without a bow and the sword poses look silly with a club. Maybe the 0day update with make the book poses update as the sovs do.

I'm not happy with the AI at this point for the following reasons:

1. He is not defending his towns as effectively as he should.

2. He is not good enough at choosing what types of units to build and choosing the right quantity

These two things make the AI very problematic.  It's something I am going to be addressing more this weekend.

In the long run, it'll probably take about a year or two for me to be truly happy with the AI though.
End of Frogboy's quote

Thank you very much for your honest reply, but do you think that its possible to improve the AI in the remaining days?

I ask, because i think the AI is one of the most important parts in a singleplayer game...

Anyone know how many turns is a year game time?

Whatever your imagination needs it to be.  The turns have no particular time equivalent.

That begs the question on tuns till maturity of children? How is that being addressed, static number or increasing % chance per turn till maturity? Also what is the longevity of Spouses and children? Excluding of coarse death by circumstances.

It takes 100 turns for a child to mature.
End of Frogboy's quote

Thanks Frogboy thats what i needed to know, can't wait to start pumping out tomorrows heroes |-)  . I hope the option to remarry was added aswell, its a really pain to lose your spouse early on then be childless for the remander of the game. Although it does add to the importance of protecting your spouse.

Maybe a limit of three marraiges to keep the importance of your spouse relevent and to prevent people killing of low level spouses in favor for higher level ones.

I have suggestion about strength of towns, troops and magic:

1.  Town ppl can take fight too - it good idea, because it influence on strategy, so players and AI will be defend city instead of getting open field battle. Citizens can form some untrained troops, enough for pulling balance to defend-side, it number compared with number of town population

2. Bear (natural ally) and fireballs (or lightning, or bolder - doesn't matter) - seems unbalancing game at start. In fact, these strong things appear too early, so i suggest change bear strength or even swap em to mouse or rat, or other small creature, with decreased amount of damage

3. Fireball should be changed to spark or some, with amount of damage near 1-2, instead 8-12 at the moment. Maybe it will be god idea - let cast only one time per round in tactical battle, without moving.

Because - it seems unbalancing again, if some player take magic books, and some not, and this two players meet at battlefield - bear and fireball on one side, and just troops in leather armor at other side. Maybe other way is give more hp to initial troops, about x2, x3 from at this moment.

And i have question about modding of AI - it is possible at all? Maybe not right now, but after number of patches?

It can be rule-book for ai, based on xml file, or some, if you don't want put scripts like python into game. Something like rule-set, which give AI direct should he will do in any situation (numbers of troops per city and other stuff)

Ok,thanks for the answers i guess it will be a surprise, and as mantionned before , I CAN'T WAIT ANY LONGER, OMG RELEASE THIS DAMED UBER GAME !!!

Until we get some early on missile units (stone throwers, slingers, spear chuckers) then a wandering summoning hero who can meditate (spell research) will get a Blitz Win every time.   If there is no deterrent to the caster hero(and summoned allies) , then early opponents are toast.

So the whole AI recruits the nasty creature nearby to keep our Hero away seems the likely result.

Wow, this is so cool, def getting better as we go and get towards the mid game. Yet I can't help but think of this every time I see a tactical battle...

Well if maturity is at the age of 18. And it takes 100 turns to mature then each year is equal to 5.55555555555556 turns. (I could be missing a couple of 5's.

Mini-games can be fun and add depth if done right. If not done right then you have Spore. Just because one game immplements it poorly does not mean it is a bad idea.

Interesting how he walks around in the woods, meets a girl wearing a dress, cape and a club, and marries her on the spot.

Maybe I would too... hmm...
