Elemental: Game Play Example – Part 2

…Our story so far…

https://forums.elementalgame.com/390900

The Kingdom of Capitar has one city called Resolve. It’s thief turned King, Roland, finds himself at war with the Empire of Yithril led by the Emperor Verga.

..

I am Ezmir, son of Athalyir. This is the chronicle of the Kingdom of Capitar and the story of Roland its King.  His fledgling Outpost of Resolve with only 14 souls in it, was already under siege by the Fallen Empire of Yithril.

image

“I’m not feeling good about this,” Roland said to Janusk the Scribe.

“You have nothing to fear, you are a channeler, a being of mystical power and might,” Janusk replied.

Roland grunted.

“Look, there’s 4 of us. Me, you, William – and he’s a pioneer, and a bear that is possibly diseased.”

“He is green,” Janusk agreed. “I am sure Muggles will do his best.”

“Muggles?”

“Yes.”

“You named the bear?”

“Yes.”

“You named the bear, Muggles?”

“It seemed fitting.”

image

“Let’s move on.  Our only hope is to find some allies. There’s only 14 of us in the Outpost so far.  Our Outpost is surrounded by a swamp.”

Roland ordered William to head a bit south to scout for something that could help him. Unfortunately, what he found were soldiers of Yithril!

imageUnarmed, William only had his fists.

imageWilliam was lost.

The battle was close enough that Roland was able to look at what the enemy was armed with.

image

“This could be trouble, they have good weapons and they are equipped with armor,” Roland observed.

 imageimage

After a couple such battles, Roland was exhausted of mana. It would take a few days for him to recover himself. Without his magical power, all hope would be lost.  If Verga himself came forward, with his power, we knew we would be doomed. The farm at Resolve had finally been completed and with the available food housing began to be constructed to welcome the people from the wilds looking for a society to be apart of.

Teleporting back, Roland consulted with the Lore Master on what magical advantages they might make use of. The best bet was to gain the help of the sentient spiders that he had heard of. Sage Master agreed and said they were working as fast as they could. That was when the Lore Master suggested Brilliance.

image

The second month begins

In less than a month Roland had founded a Kingdom. Its capital, Resolve, now had 28 people living in it. A malevolent neighbor, Verga, had set up his own Empire nearby and had declared war.

image

Even better, the Sages had deciphered the old texts and found the location and way to communicate with the legendary sentient spiders.

image Using up all of the wealth we had accumulated, we were able to recruit 8 spiders for the cause.

The only downside is that the world was getting more dangerous. Bloody adventurers.

More to come…

I actually was sad to see 8 attack, 2 defense on the unit stat. Armor is so much more expensive than weapons, but vastly underpowered compared to them. Combat is still going to end up in one-hit-kills unit trades with stats like these

Why is the attack so much more than defense in the combat? Isnt this going to cause issues on whoever hits first, wins?

Yes Looks like they didn't revisit this stat balance from beta, though a lot of us pushed for more equalizing of attack and defense. Maybe in the day0 update, but I don't know.

Wouldn't it lead to reason Frogboy is playing with the most "up to date" version though? I know that wouldn't necessarily mean he's playing with a complete 0-day patch, but he's probably got some of the "updated from Gold" files in his version. At least I would think so anyway.

When I do my "Epic Wars" Mod I plan on adjusting the armor values and adding in "Magical Resistance" to some magical armor types.

I would have to assume brad is playing with 0-day, wouldn't you?? But maybe not... I hadn't even noticed the attack-defense thing, but it is definitely a concern worth noting.

I'm playing with the gold version, not day 0 version.

Of course there are multiple paths.  That's not in question.

The question, which has been clearly stated several times, is how balanced are the paths?

Brad probably has some idea, but hasn't given his opinion on it yet, at least not in these AAR threads.

I would also like to know how balanced combat is. It seems the attack rating is high and the defense ratings are very low, but I dont know why.

So concerning ATT & DEF versus STR & DEX.

Any reason to put points into STR & DEX at all?   A 2 hander is equal to 15 str and  a full set of armor is equal to 15 dex.   So only in the early game (bare fisted and naked) do the stats do you any good.    Considering stat cost, I would rather summon some Muggles.

Well the way it worked in the beta is that the stats offered percentage increases to attack, defense, etc - not flat values. So putting a point in STR when you have 20 attack gives a bigger bonus than if you had 10 attack.

I wouldn't be so quick to judge just by looking at the attack/defense stats. Remember GalCiv? Each fleet showed the total defense/attack as stats, yet in battles it was always a single ship attacking a single enemy. There was a clear preference on attack vs defense as well, but one shot kills were quite rare between comparable fleets. I suspect groups use a simmilar system in Elemental. And any defense used to be quite effective in Galciv even if it was just a small portion of the enemy attack strenght.

Vs 0 defense you'll probably do your full attack strenght in damage, but any armor will mitigate it a lot.

Combat in elemental works on rolls. If your weapon does 8 damage, you roll 0-8 on your attack. If the defender has 2 armor, he rolls 0-2 (unless the armor is good against your damage type, in which case it's an automatic 2). The difference between the rolls is the damage done in the attack.

As far as I can tell, groups just pool the stats together. So if you have 10 guys with 10 damage each against 10 guys with 2 armor each, you'll just roll 0-100 and they'll roll 0-20, deal the difference in damage, and the game will then see how many of the 10 guys with 2 armor die from the attack. I haven't seen anything to suggest that when attacking in the above scenario, you do 10 rolls of 0-10 and they do 10 rolls of 0-2.

The reason we're worried about it is because that's how it ended up in the beta when tactical battles were put in. Most of the fights were just one/two-hit-kill unit trades.

If things work out, we will have the answer to these types of specific questions on Sunday or Monday next week. If not, then the 24th will tell the tale.

Then we can come back here and make it right, if it isn't, already. LOL:)

Very true.  I can wait, indeed I am planning on buying the game in September or October anyway, though the sooner the balance discussions start, the sooner decisions can be made as to what balance issues need to be addressed.

Right now, it feels more like an RPG than an Epic civilisation building game. Maybe it is because we are at the beginning of the game.

It would be nice if fielding spiders in a tactical battle reduced the morale of all human units, including your own, a little bit. Everybody is scared of giant spiders, right?

Yes.. The bear kicks ass.   Would like to be able to outfit him in armor too..  maybe some sort of midget or dwarf riding him with a crossbow too.

That would be amazing - in a silly, sort of ridiculous way.

Hmmm bear calvary, where have I heard that discussion before?  :-"

I think it has it's own post.. or six.

My modding goal is the spell of random creature summon.

anything from a mighty dragon to a fierce battle hamster.

Pretty cool. I have a question, those message that say adventures let loose some creatures and such. Are those creatures actully now wondering around?  I have seen these mesages a lot in beta but never found any evidence that these messages meant something.

They are actually let loose in the lands, yes. It's hard to tell though because the messages aren't specific about what creatures were set free by name so you don't really know when you see it if it's the creature in question or a random spawn. In order to tell you'd have to be lucky enough to actually see the adventurers go into the dungeon and either not come out (because they were killed) or come running out being chased by a creature.

SO basically the story is 'hey guys, look! I have no powers, but I am a channeler... Really! Follow me!' And the dumb masses do so...

Disappointing.
