Beta to full relese change question

This is probably a dumb question but it continues to be a sorce of worrie for me.

Will i need to re-download the full release of elemental when it comes out or will there be a patch to upgrade the beta into the full release?

This is the fisrt time for me to have gone bete on a game so im not sure how it works. :S

You will be able to update directly, but unless you're on a really bad connection it's always beneficial to just do a clean install to get rid of any garbage/unused files that might end up causing issues.

I will do a full uninstall, and manually delete everything left under mydocuments by Elemental. Then I can have a fresh install with less possibility for trouble.

If you have done any Modding, be sure to off load those to a side Folder for later re-integration though.

Well that is what I am going to do anyways. LOL!

With the Sins expansion betas it was a full reinstall, I guess it will be the same here.  I'm getting a box anyway as my connection is currently dire.

Even if it doesn't force you to do a reinstall, you will probably want to anyway. Any number of dramatic things can change between beta and release, including the installer (and new installer scripts don't always run on updates, as I learned with the games explorer going from beta 3 to beta 4).

It's best to start fresh with a release copy of the game.

Are you absolutely sure? The full game will be no where close to the beta - the version the developers have been working on is entirely different, so I doubt if they are going to make a patch.

No, they're not going to make a patch, but that's not how updating works. Impulse just updates by comparing your installed files to their files, and downloads everything that's different or missing. That's why you can update from betas to the final release.

Clean install is always better.

I myself have run afoul of the horrible evil hidden directory c:\programdata\stardock\elemental that has crap in it from long ago.  I hate hidden directories. :(

Is it possible to install the game in a non-default directory, say on a different drive?  Or does it always install in C:\Program Files\...?

Best regards,
Steven.

It is possible to choose where to install. To do that:

Click the blue thing next to the explore button.

Choose Preferences

In the window that pops up, choose Folders.

Then click on my software, to get a dropdown, choose My games.

there you can choose default path, and also tick of a box for promt for install directory.

Hit ok to save what you have done. ;)

Enjoy.

I think to get GFW Certification the Install and User Files must be in the default location.

User files must be. Install files need to default there, but letting the user install it somewhere else if they choose is just proper installer design.

Was wondering about this.

After uninstalling through Impluse, still had lots of Elemental files in

c:\programdata\stardock\elemental

and

C:\Users\(account name)\Documents\My Games

Yea, I had that issue from Beta 3 to Beta 4.  Would be great to have an uninstall guide here on the forums for both XP and Vista/Win 7 of what all should be manually deleted and what registry entries should be removed (if any).

Thanks!
