Last day in CA

Today’s my last day in California. In the next few days, the previews should start showing up at which point I’ll be free to tell you about the fairly massive changes to the game between Beta 4 (the public build) and Beta 5 (current build) as well as what’s coming up for release.

The high level changes are:

  • The finalized Game UI
    • The finalized Empire Tree (ala Sins of a Solar Empire)
    • Finalized City and Unit UI
    • Finalized Tactical Battle UI
    • Finalized Font Display (i.e. the replacement of the placeholder fonts with the final game fonts)
  • The Finalized Technology Tree
    • Civilization, Warfare techs are fairly similar to what they are now except there’s a few more of them.
    • Adventure allows players to uncover rare resources, world awareness, and a number of other things.
    • Diplomacy uncovers various levels of recruitable units that you can train – i.e. make friends with special races that you can then train at associated settlement.
    • Magic tree lets players magnify the power of their spells if they have the appropriate shard (i.e. Morrigan’s Hammer does N damage normally but if you control an earth shard it does 2N damage, Maelstrom will do 1 tile of harm normally but do N radius out for every air shard you control. Moreover, the Magic tree will allow players to discover the special abilities within their own champions beyond their inherent ones i.e. You’ll be able to see what they are in NPCs as well as your existing ones suddenly discovering theirs).
    • Zillions of other tweaks and refinements.
    • Random House descriptions replacing placeholder text.
  • The Finalized Tactical Battle System
    • Number of Action points a spell takes to cast is based on the caster’s wisdom.
    • Tons of other changes too long to list.
  • The Final Quest and Notification System implemented
    • Basically nearly all the quests and notable locations from the beta are gone, replaced with the final ones we’ve been working on.
  • Hundreds of other game play tweaks and changes.
  • And of course bug fixes galore, especially on memory (this got fixed in beta 5, I was quite concerned on this one, but thanks to users helping us, we were able to track this down to our effects system not deallocating properly and on certain newer ATI cards on 64-bit windows it could lose 100 megabytes per turn).
  • The Campaign which is made entirely with the mod tools.

So in the next week or so the “gold” version will go out to manufacturing and then we’ll spend the subsequent 2 weeks polishing and enhancing for the release version that will go to users and reviewers.

I’ll go into more detail on these things in about a week. In the meantime, I’ll get back to the mods and such when I have a chance.

The "magnified magical power" sounds interesting...

I can't wait to see the previews AND hear all the goods from you!

Ah good news! I do like the updates to adventure and diplomacy. Makes me want to use them.

Sounds great.    I really look forward to seeting the first "production" version.

But 20 more days before the release seems like a long time.    What would really be great would be if the beta testers got to see it slightly early...............

Will beta testers get a crack at the "ready to manufacture" version before the 24th or do we have to wait?  I know it's only a couple of weeks but i figured it wouldn't hurt to ask.

With any luck you can fix this out of memory issue, any more than 20 turns and desktop does not make this fun! Has not been an issue till the last build, at least for me! I do hope you had a chance to relax and eat some good food while you were there :D !!

As much as I would like beta 5, I think that one reason we won't is that they would have to waste time to diverge the code tree and make a build for us. I think Beta for us is pretty much over, but I could be wrong.

Number of Action points a spell takes to cast is based on the caster’s wisdom.

Thank you. The # of shards multiplying the effects of spells sounds pretty nifty as well.

The tech tree changes sound very interesting.  Civ and Warfare always seemed well constructed but the others felt pretty meh, now they sound like interesting trees in their own right.  I also like the action points tied to Wisdom thing.

Now I'm yet MORE pumped for the 24th.  Aaaaaaaaaaaargh.

Lots of these changes sound neat.

I don't the game design requiring you to have a spellbook and matching shard. Sure you could create your caster so that they have all of the elemental books but that takes a big chunk of your points.

In the last beta, researching magic also gave me books I was missing. But you're looking at a large amount of research until you luck into the book that matches a shard you own. Seems too risky to count on winning via magic. Perhaps Beta 5 improves this.

Sounds excellent, I can't wait to give beta 5 a go!

Beta 5 isn't being released to the public...

No mention of the spellbook?  What has been done in that regard... please tell me there's a lot more spells (and a lot more unique spellbooks)...

I know that beta 5 will not be a public release, but how about everyone who pre-orders the game gets a demo version?  ;)

Edit: Not beta 5, like a finished "gold version" demo ;)

Kind of odd to say, but I'm almost more excited to see the difference between the 0-day-release (including the stuff held back to the internal beta) and beta 4 than actually playing the game.

So nothing else we can help with til the release then?  Sigh.  Im sad.  One thing I would really like to see though is that cute beginning intros they had, as if it was a DoS game.  That really made me laugh to see it haha.  Brought back memories.  Any chance that will be on the collectors edition?

@Frogboy

any word on performance improvements? I posted about beta 4 only using 1 core of my CPU as well as the fact that I get only approx 15 fps: https://forums.elementalgame.com/389737

Can we have a screenshot? :)

At last :) Keep up the good work.

I hope that the Empire Tree is called Kingdom Tree when I'm playing as such. Just saying. :P

Any news about super duper edition with "The Book" included? Anything that saves me from another extra shipping from the USA would be most welcome. Specially if it really has "extra stuff" for buying "The Book".

Will we get to play beta 5, or are we stuck with 4 until release? I'd be just as happy with some updates to the map editor though :D
