See, I don't see that as a bug. EITHER of those. I enjoy when I get those challenges. In the first case, it makes you research for navies, or seafaring (depending on faction) so you can get boats and sail to another part of the map. Annoying yes, but a great way to make the game different every once in a while. As for the second one...really? So you have to move a little to find a good resource to plop your city next to? I'm not trying to offend here, sorry if I do. I personally LOVE that the game makes you play a little differently every time. THAT's what make a great game with great replayability.

Now, back to the first "problem". I DID however have a problem with that situation. Mine wasn't quite so small, but similar closed in by mountains typoe of thing. I was able to build a harbor, however after building a transport, it couldn't move out of the city. THAT makes it a bit impossible to then expand. I don't have the save file anymore, so I didn't create a post. I really wish I had.

I also got the "in-the-middle-of-the-forest" start. And while the sovereign can move around, getting the free city in there is bad, since it can't grow (no buildable spaces).

So I believe it is indeed a bug. Unfortunatelly I didn't save the game, so I only have the screenshot.

End of karvan's quote

Same start hear, posted with save and debug.err. The screen shots looks simular, maybe this is one of the old maps with a hardcoded starting point?

No offense taken, the forest start was kinda cool, I hadn't even seen forests that big before.. took me more than 30 turns before I found a suitable place for city. Luckily I started with movement 4 ^^

I do like challenges and varying start locations.. but imagine pressing next turn for ~50+ turns in multiplayer while researching for seafaring tech, gathering gold for actually building harbor and ship etc. There's not much to do, build something every few turns and choose techs.

And that forest.. less of the same. At least exploring is bit more interesting. But starting with a 2 movement sovereign with no fighting skills whatsoever might really suck there.

In single player it's not really a problem, but in multiplayer starting places should be somewhat equal. Wasn't there a disadvantage earlier that had you start in worse place? That could still work imo.

The forest map should've been random.. at least I didn't do anything special.
