PC Gamers out-performed Console Gamers

PC Gamers out-performed Console Gamers

An interesting article.

http://gizmodo.com/5593116/were-pc-gamers-too-good-for-microsofts-cross+platform-gaming-project

Apparently, Microsoft tried their hands at a cross-platform play system between the Xbox 360 and Windows PCs.  It was abandoned after testing mediocre PC Players against the best Console Players revealed that PC Players won.  All the time.  It was such a significant issue that it forced Microsoft to abandon the project entirely.

"The console players got destroyed every time. So much so that it would be embarrassing to the XBOX team in general had Microsoft launched this initiative."
End of quote

Looks like the Controller VS Keyboard + Mouse issue was just answered entirely, although I wouldn't have thought that it would have provided such a massive difference, considering it was only the Medicore PC Gamers.  I think this says a lot about the two platforms, and Microsoft.  Why not just enable Mouse + Keyboard control for the Xbox, as Windows already enables Xbox 360 use, to help ensure a level playing field?

Quoting alway, reply 10I can snipe people with a handgun in Far Cry 2 from so far away their heads are a single pixel. Whereas with a gamepad, I can barely hit something using the spray and pray method from 5 meters away. There's a reason console game weapons have a melee mode whereas most PC games don't.
interesting you say this (though a bit exaggerated with spray and pray)

B/c i think the mouse is too accurate (as you said sniping with a pistol about 300 meters away), that i find PC FPS to be too easy to aim and thus boring or feels like im playing a babies game.

The controller on consoles adds a degree of difficulty so you arent sniping difficult shots so easy. I play COD on consoles and hated how easy it was to aim. Played it on PC, and i couldnt stand it at all. Cant believe PC games even play it. Complete trash.

Now if you want to talk real aiming system then ya you need a mouse.
End of Grove12345's quote

What? If you can snipe with a pistol then its the game that isn't balanced, not the mouse. I've had atrocious controls in some PC games, usually input lag, that total screw over my ability to use the controller. Remember you don't AIM with the mouse, you move it the amount your brain thinks it needs to move (based previous use) and then you press the button at the correct time.

If there is input lag or low FPS simulation then you miss - it can take several seconds to actualy get on target in these situations with over and under traverse.

And 4Nana, Nesrie isn't a random person. If you say something wrong she will attack you which is a highlight of the forum! :)

srsly.. why do random ppl keep jumping in quoting replies and completely misconstruing them because they didn't bother to follow the rest of the conversation?

Just because you don't like what you read, doesn't mean someone didn't read the thread. This wasn't even two pages long, so it didn't take long to read. Nice try though.

There is a difference between reading the words and understanding what is written.  It's not an issue of whether I liked what I read or didn't like.  It simply didn't fit in.  Nice try though.

I've yet to see you refute what I said. Keep going!-_-

err.. why would I do that when it doesn't fit in whatsoever?  It's like a discussion about oranges, and someone chimes in "ya but apples... "

I grew up playing games on consoles and didn't get my first real gaming PC until I was 18. So, at 18 I started gaming with a mouse and keyboard. Which is better? Well, that depends on what kind of game I'm playing. If I'm playing a FPS, then of course the mouse and keyboard allows WAY more accuracy. If I'm playing a fighting game, I go with a controller. (ever try to get Ryu to do a shoryuken with a kayboard...PAIN IN THE ASS)

Different types of games play better on different platforms.

You think a shoryuken with a mouse and keyboard is hard?  Try playing Devil May Cry 3 or 4 with a mouse and keyboard.  Thankfully I have a Logitech Rumble Pad 2 so I don't have to. :P

Top downers are pretty good too, you can really wear your wrists out using a mouse for rotational control instead of a thumb-stick.

2d sidescrollers and jumping games seem to work better with controllers too.

Sports games are generally better with a controller as well. At least soccer games.

I don't want keyboard support for my console games. If online console games had keyboard support, you would be forced to play with a keyboard to compete. I'd rather play with the gimped controller and not take things that seriously. It's more fun that way.

Interesting.   I am a pc gamer at heart, but I own a PS3.   I had Unreal Tournament 3 for the ps3 and it did have the keyboard and mouse enabled for the PS3, it was great.  I loved it.    I thought to myself, you know what if all the consoles enabled keyboard and mouse and started adding strategy games, then I might have to make the console my main gaming platform.  However, they haven't done it and who know if they ever will.

Until then, the pc will serve me great for both work & play.

I beat DMC4 with my mouse and keyboard :P

Wow.  You're one tough bastard.

Really, why not just offer keyboard and mouse and a controller. Then people can use/buy whatever they like. Works for everything else.

Ppl like using the controller to play games

I dont, the primary reason I don't have a console.

Likewise, I don't like tha controller either and is the primary reason why I don't own a console system either. If they included a mouse/keyboard interface on the console I would make the transition immediately.

My last console system I owned was an Atari 2600 system.  Up until  the last five years I have viewed console systems as a game systems made for acrade style games ala Mario/Sonic/Streetfighter. Games that I felt I have outgrown and no longer enjoy playing. But the recent batch of console systems have adpoted more and more PC like functionality with hard disks and  Internet connectivity and many titles that I enjoy playing (mainly western RPGs) are  multi-platform with both PC and Console offerings. The division bewteen Console and PC are becoming more and more blurred.  I have built three custom PC systems in the last 10 years for the specific purpose of playing games and surfing the web. Had Sega or Microsoft introduce and included a Mouse/Keyboard interface for there games than I would be typing this message from a PS3/Xbox system rather than a PC. More and more publishers are neglecting the PC market for the advantages of console releases:limited pirating, standardize hardware/os, and a broader market. The killing blow  to PC gaming, in my opinion, would be mouse/keyboard support on console systems. Than the publishers can give the players a choice to play the game with the system default controller or with the mouse and keyboard. Choice is always a plus in my book.

While the are certainly cross platform games that you say blurr the line, I've yet to see too many of those play better on a console than on a PC. I mean show these games side by side, and it's clear a good gaming PC still stomps the consoles. PC are still a lot more versatile too. The biggest up consoles have over the PC has nothing to do with the controller and lot more to do with just less hassle. But hey, not to worry, Activision is working hard to figure out a way to milk all gamers for more money, especially the consoles, so I am sure they'll figure out a way to bring back the hassle any time now.

Yeah, I know I'm just THAT good |-)

I'm surprised that they haven't come out with a small keyboard for consoles yet though. The Wii nunchuk and a small keyboard could do wonders I think.
