Why can't I mine recources?

I thought in 3B we would be able to mine/harvest resources even though our city was not touching the resource. Yet the only one I've been able to build a mine on is gold. I researched mining and harvesting, but I am unable to build on another gold mine in my influence area, nor an iron mine and crystal mine. I also am unable to build a lumbar yard. Hard to read the text I put in the picture so in red it says "Red:Unable to mine." In blue it says "Blue:Able to mine."

Any ideas?

Select the resource.

You will see the build option icon.

This button may not click-able if you do not have the resource required for building. Over on the build option icon to know the cost of the building.

What is that thing on the left that looks like an old Mac with red lightening coming from it?

If a resource is adjacent to your city you can build on it. If not you need to first build a pioneer, send it to the resource, then use the pioneer to build on the resource. Need to make sure you have the correct amount of resources to build because at this stage there is no meaningful feedback on what resources are missing when you send a pioneer.

? You do not need a pioneer? I just clicked it, clicked the wooden hammer and ta-da construction site that eventaully became a mine/mill/etc.

Yep. And in beta 3C, we're eliminating the tech requirements.  If you have the resource in your territory, you can build on it if you have the money and materials.

The techs will then allow you to improve your extraction.

I don't know why I had put in a tech requirement in the first place. Brain damage is my main assumption.

I mean, *I* used to go to Cripple Creek Colorado and mine for gold with my dad when I was 5. If a 5 year old can attempt to pick up gold, I think adults can do it.

Can a five year old tame the power of fire and ice though? Us humans can't. Don't know about frogs or machines though.

What I mean is: Even for the shards?

Hope SD put in a panning for gold mini-game where you sit for five hours and find fuck all.

so...basically you will get a small amount of those resources, and with the tech upgrades you will just start getting more?  be careful how you implement this, it could work pretty well but may take some important strategic choices out of the players hands. i defer my criticism to your expertise.
