I am having the failed to download data file problem, tried every possible solution to do with firewalls. Also tried the Elemental.exe solution (opening it directly), but that results in a huge number of ui problems. Please help.
How can you have UI issues if you can't download the data file?
UI issues sounds like there is something in the Prefs.ini video settings your video card doesn't like.
Did you try running in windows mode? The load screen can sometimes hide error messages behind it.
On XP
C:\Documents and Settings\Admin\My Documents\My Games\Elemental
Set Fullscreen=0 in the Prefs.ini file.
Make sure your not downloading anything else, it seems to be a timing issue, if Elemental.exe can't get the data file in a limited amount of time it just hangs.
When I use the Elemental.exe direct method then I do not have the unable to download data file error, however, I then get a large number of ui problems eg:

I'm assuming if the normal way of opening the game worked then I would not get these ui problems. Something I found just now on the data file problem was that I cannot log in to impulse in-game:

My drivers for video card are updated and I'm having the same problem across two computers with different video cards, ie. I tried it on both, neither worked. Will try above ini suggestion now.
Edit: no luck with ini file, got window mode but didn't help. Additionally, the impulse in-game menu login works with the Elemental.exe but not with the standard way of opening the game.
Edit 2:Starting to think my biggest problem is the ui and missing layers etc.
Bump, really at a loss as to how to fix the missing ui parts, or the login problems with the standard launcher.

After a number of re-installs the failed to download... is resolved, no idea how or why.
However the ui/graphics problems remain and the game is unplayable as a result.

I've absolutely no idea what to do about it.
