Boosting Spells with Possession of Multiple Shards

I think there should be more interplay with shards and their particular spell book.  In my opinion, if I have a spell book of a particular element, and two or more shards of that element, that should almost always give the spell a boost.  For instance, a sovereign with a fire spell book and 2 fire shards should get a multiplier to the spell, per shard (Ex. Fireball spell with 2 fire shards = (Int/3 fire damage *2), with 3 fire shards it would be (Int/3 fire damage *3). Clearly the multipliers can be tweaked based on beta testing. While the bonus could be easy to figure out for the “damage” or “number” based spells, the concept could be expanded to nearly all the other spell types.

With the recent addition of the non-element spellbooks (combat, enchantments, etc.), the “boost” bonus could still work with the addition of a “neutral” or non-element based shard to the game.  Once you claim that “neutral” shard, you would then designate the particular non-element spell book it should correspond to.   The “neutral” shard is then changed to reflect the new focus (combat, enchantments, etc.) and it would give bonuses to that spell category accordingly.  If that is too complicated, then just make the "neutral" shards apply bonuses to any non-element spell book, but at a lesser multiplier rate.

Sounds like a good idea.  FFH2 allows free spells if you have more than one of the same type of mana node, so in the context of Elemental, I think ideas like the above could work well. =)

Best regards,

it was discussed in many other posts, the idea of shards boosting spells is good

your values are too high, the boost should be way less but theres time to balance things

Yeah, I was using the multiplier as an example.  I just think that fundamentally, you should get extra boosts for owning several shards of a particular type.

Has anyone played sacred 2 ? It has a very good system for spells enhancement : you can choose up to 3 upgrades for your spells. And som eupgrades are mutually exclusive, so you have to make a choice.

In Elemental we could have enhancement based on shards you own. For instance in the research spells, instead or buying a new spell you can use your psell points to upgrade a spell IF you have the necesseray shards.

For instance : You have the fireball and you control one shard. You research an upgrade that allow you to have an area of effect on your fireball. It has a cost in spell points, and you can only use as many spell points per turn as your number of shards. If the AoE is 50 spell points, you would need 50 turns if you have a fire shard, 25 turns if you have 2 fire shards, etc.

Or .. in battle you can enhance the spells you throw thanks to shards : when you choose your fireball you have options. If you have 1 fire shard you get the possibility to enhance damage but at a greater cost in mana. If you have 2 fire shards you have two options : more damage or a small area of effect, three shards you can combine the first two options, 4 fire shards, you can combine them for less mana increase, or choose only one enhancment for no mana increase, etc.
