Is it possible to rename cities? If not, think it would be a nice addition.

Agreed. Maybe just a little tab on the upcoming "Hud" next to the name of the city have a little place to click that allows the player to re-name the city.
There's a bunch of "little options" like that from Gal Civ 2 that need to be immediately imported over to Elemental I think. That's just me though.
Imagine how terrible it would be to conquer a city and strip it of it's identity to assimilate it into your rule but can't even change the name! Horrifying!
(In all seriousness not being able to rename them is the Elemental version of a paper cut. Not tragic but annoying.)

Agreed. If I took a city and didn't like the name, I'd raze & replace. Kind of an expensive way to rename a city but it works.
