[Crash] Game does not get past the introduction screen (Beta 2B)

(see bottom post)

Hi.

In beta 2 I was only able to get past the loading screen, upon starting the game, three times of twenty times. Beta 2A so far never get past the introduction screen. It just seems like the game stalls. I am able to move the mouse around and press ctr-alt-del. Windows tells me that the game is not responding and if I terminate the Elemental process I am told that an error, named AppHangB1, occured.

Have the dubug.err file been reintorduced in the 2A version and if so, where do I find it?

Tech specs:

Windows 7 home premium 64bit OS

i7 1.60Ghz processor

4gb ram

ATI radeon hd 4670

All drivers updated, firewall exceptions for both impulse and elemental added. Internet connection of course :)

Have tried uninstall-reinstall without any succes.

Does anyone have any idea what might cause this problem?

Could it be that the game is awaiting internet access and you need to click allow in ZoneAlarm. I have this problem every time the game is updated. My trick is to switch back and forth between my two external monitors and my laptop screen. Then I can see the ZoneAlarm question and click allow.

It could be yes... but I only have the monitor on my laptop, so I cannot do that. I do not see any zone alarm when i ctr-alt-del to the task manager.

Further I have set up exceptions in the windows firewall (and my antivirus) so I do not think that zone alarms should occur??

Try changing to windowed mode!

C:\Documents and Settings\Admin\My Documents\My Games\Elemental

Edit the Prefs.ini file change Fullscreen=1 to Fullscreen=0

Could be your firewall blocking Elemental.exe

It just takes me 2 minutes to load on my gaming PC. I'm guessing it's an internet thing. Have you tried waiting?

^ yes I have tried waiting for like 10 minutes without succes.

That being said most time I have probably only waited for about 1 minute (the task manager says the game is not responding though)

@ pad 152 - thanks a lot, will try that :)

Alright so I found the debug.err file but I have nowhere to upload it (as I remember that we should not upload it to sites like rapidshare etc). It is only 4 kb, is it possible that I can mail to some of you guys at stardock?

As noted in the sticky, you can post it via pastebin or dropbox (or any site that allows it to be viewed directly without limits, timers, or speedbumps).

You can find detailed instructions here, but to put it simply:

  1. Type "dxdiag" into your Start Menu and hit enter.
  2. Click "Save All Information".

Here is my DXdiag file(s) and debug.err

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/5227545/DxDiag%2064bit.txt     (64 bit DXdiag)

I am still not able to get past the splash screen.

Have you tried uninstalling then reinstalling the game?  Make sure you delete all the game files in \Documents\My Games\Elemental\ folder as well.

I had a problem similar to yours in one of the earlier betas and that fixed it for me.

Sounds like an Internet firewall issue.

The good news is that Beta 4 will be getting rid of this (it's the modding beta) so worst case, you'll be able to play by then.

But almost certainly something is keeping you from being able to download the data package.

BTW, this is exactly why games that try to use streaming as a form of DRM are in for pain. Imagine this being a shipping game? That's why this sort of system wouldn't make a good copy protection system but I digress.

Yes this process have definetely turned me agaisnt such DRM measures. I am grateful that you do not put online-DRM in your final games. A big thank you from here!

Sounds good about Beta 4, although it is a little frustrating not being able to participate in the current betas (especially since I got a sniff in beta 2 before the problem started).

@ malex1: I have tried uninstall/reinstall, but I do not remember if I deleted the folders in "documents". I am going to try that :D

this downloading of several files from a given server in a specified small time drm method will ALSO hit all those that exede there download limits OR are on very slow internet/dialup/wireless broadband ie those connections with less than 256kb/s throughput.
