Some basic gameplay questions

Is there any way to see all the actual stats from the heroes besides at level-up?  The character details window shows some of the stats, but it doesn't show Str-dex-wis-int-etc.  Is there any way to see that stuff besides when you level up?

I'm really hurting for information on basic game mechanics.  Is there any decent documention or web pages that give details on what the stats do and which are most important, what essense is, what spell points are used for, etc.?

One last question: I recieved a few "increases strength" books (or for some other stat).  After I use them, it doesn't seem like they had any actual effect.  How are these supposed to work?

One of the buttons on the action bar at the bottom left should bring up the full stats, if you have your sovereign selected.

The only button I can find is the big Unit Details circle in the middle of the bottom bar.  No button on the Actions tab on the bottom left.

The Unit Details tells a few of the stats but not all, as the level-up screen does. 

What am I missing?

Yes, same here - there's the big Details button but that doesn't give the stats I'm looking for, and I don't see any other button that gives stats at all.

In Unit Details, mouse over "ATK".  It shows the current Strength (as part of the formula for ATK).  Same thing with DEF.

I agree that the stats should be directly visible outside of the levelup screen, and the UI should make the effects of items more obvious at the time of use.

Let's summarize :

Mouse over attack, def, etc. to see the str, int, etc.

The icon "Big details" on the lower left bar.

Clicking the medallion.

I don't see any other way.

Essence is your own personal Mana type.  You use it to purify the land and birth wolf pups.  Currently you can only regain it by putting points in essence when you level up.  I believe spell points will be used for casting spells along with other types of mana you can harvest.  Currently there is only one spell you can cast and that is to purify the land for a city.

Ahh, I see how you can get it from the mouseover, now.  Still, a way to view them directly would be nice (even a button to just bring up and view the level up dialog would be fine).

The wiki's a good start for info also.
