I think it would be visually impressive if when you placed farms next to each other they link up to make one large farm. It would also help to make each town more unique.

hmm thats kinda a good idea
or maybe if you start 1 farm you can only build farms in the near squares or something like that
to make the city's look better
You could even extend the concept to other buildings.
Enough research buildings and it becomes a university
Enough workshops and it becomes a giant factory.
Enough houses and they become high-rises.

That's a pretty good idea, would make the cities become a lot more organic instead of the strange square look things get now.
I like it too, it'd look a lot better than the mass of disjointed building that are there now.

I do like the idea of being able to upgrade a building to a higher tier rather than demolishing four of my research buildings to fit in that higher tier building ect....
If it doesn't automatically rearrange then it'll be a farce to plan out a city. Also for the AI.
