Elemental Beta 2 Update Schedule

Elemental Beta 2 Update Schedule

The weekend is just about here and most of the team is going to get some rest. I’ll be working on the AI since I’m currently the one slowing things up. I have lots of help on the AI this time (in terms of making functions for me) but I still have to do things with those functions.

As mentioned elsewhere, we’re running a bit ahead of schedule at present so it looks like Beta 3 is going to arrive sooner than originally anticipated.

That said, we plan to have weekly updates between now and Beta 3.  The first beta update will mostly deal with the most egregious issues being reported.

Here are some of the things we’ve already found:

  1. Certain nVidia cards with newer graphics drivers (how’s that for a change?) are having lighting issues. If you turn off advanced lighting, that’ll fix it as a temporary workaround.
  2. There are a number of repeatable crash issues we’re already fixed internally that will go into the next public build.
  3. The multiplayer will continue to get love between now and beta 4.
  4. We are anxious to re-enable the sovereign and faction unit designs. Whether that’ll happen next week or not remains to be seen.
  5. Magic, Adventure, and Diplomacy are waiting on some assets from Random House (writing, descriptions, etc.) along with AI design to make use of the spells.

Here are some things to expect:

  1. Gameplay improvements will likely start occurring at an extremely rapid pace.
  2. Random Map work will start to really show up during the beta 2 cycle.
  3. General balance will rapidly improve during the beta 2 cycle.
  4. Stability should dramatically improve as we move through the beta 2 cycle.

Other things of note:

  1. Art assets and visual eye candy are being held back for release purposes. We don’t need “beta testing” of them and it allows the final game to be visually much nicer than what’s in the beta.  Hence, the attack animations and sounds are intentionally gimped.  The same is true of ground textures and other items.

Things we are concerned about:

  1. Memory use.  If you run the game with a /w parameter, it’ll run in a window. We are looking for things that cause the game to run out of memory. There are some memory leaks in there that we’ll be looking to eliminate as quickly as possible.

Have a good weekend!

I love the amphibious monsters. Specially the powerful Coastal Fish-eating monster (slath/skagg?) and the Swamp Drake (Slag).

I'm not in the beta what is the monster called out of interest?

Is it still possible to pre-order and get in the Beta 2 or does pre-ordering now just let me get into Beta 3 ( which I would assume would be in a couple of weeks considering that we are about 9 weeks away from launch )?

I noticed one of those has the wrong description. It has the Description in the Heiregimon of a Wolf. The whole description talks about how Wolves hunt in packs..lol. Now that's either a serious typo or just some placeholder info.

Ok I am new so sorry for if my questions are noob questions :(

How are some of you getting the game to last so long? My longest game so far is 1hour 15mins and I have conquered both AI's.... I have tried not to find them but everytime I stumble across them somehow while out exploring and then they decide to attack me... so I kill them... I guess my only option is to just sit tight and let them send wave after wave of troops at me and never go take over their city?

Yeah, I kind of have to ask the same thing. Seems like all i need to do is boost up my main hero and attack their village and its over. No need for units or champions. No need for any city at all, actually.

Well, the AI isn't really a challenge yet, so if you want to win, that can happen fairly quickly. Personally I just choose to ignore those little AI and their hissy fits, and head off to find adventure. Remember that the game is still in beta and most of the AI work hasn't been done yet, and it probably won't be done until the day before release.

Oh no doubt, I totally understand that.. I just saw some people posting they had 3 hour games going etc... and I was curious if I was doing something wrong :)

No wrong way to play it, I still haven't won a single game yet :)   I think most people are just having fun exploring. Trying to kill some of the stronger monsters can be somewhat challenging, at least you will need to research some stuff and level you sovereign a bit. Those swamp dragons are tough as nails, can't wait to see how strong a real dragon is going to be!

hehe, eventually I was able to get my Sovereign to fight a Swamp Dragon 1 on 1 and win!!! :)

but anyways, what do you need to research to build magical rings (or units with magical rings)? I noticed the AI doing this but I couldn't yet figure it out (as there are no magical techs).

Things will get even prettier? Nice, especially as they're very sweet to look at already.
