Impulse Weekly Roundup - June 11th

Another week down, and it appears we are at about the halfway point of the year.  Before you know it, the Holiday season will be upon us.  Lets not get too far ahead of ourselves today, but it is Friday, and it is time we do our roundup of Impulse happenings from the past week.

Among the many releases this week we also had a big update go out for Demigod, bringing it up to v1.3.  You can view details of the update here.  Another update to mention is for Pole Position 2010, the new version of this classic game.

Pre-orders are open for the upcoming action MMO, All Points Bulletin from Realtime Worlds and Electronic Arts.  Pre-ordering through Impulse will give you access to the pre-launch demo event, VIP Access, and exclusive in-game items.

Hmm. Lots of games. Do people buy games online? I can see why Impulse supports the applications and utilities but games?

Games are a huge part.

Times, they are a changing. I said the same thing a few years ago, but now have bought more than 75 games through digital distribution. Stardock is a big reason for that as I had refused to buy from or even use DD before finding SD with their great customer relations and transparency. Won't be much reason to buy retail soon, since every game on a shelf will be tied to some kind of online account/service anyways. Just might as well go there first.

Oh, buying games online is fantastic.

1. There's only two places here (Maui, Hawai'i) that sell PC games - Walmart and Gamestop. I'd much rather buy from Impulse/Stardock and Steam/Valve as I believe they're far better for the industry. I try to buy locally as I can, but this is definitely one of my exceptions.

2. No more lost/damaged discs or registration keys. Very convenient. I recently moved off of Windows 7 RC to Windows 7 Home Premium - using Impulse I reloaded all my games, fully patched, without having to fuss with much at all.

3. I love the sales. Brick-and-mortar stores almost never have sales on games that I can think of.

4. Indie games, old games, and more! Retail is pretty ruthless, and there's some great games that would probably flop horribly in a retail environment if they even managed to get carried at all. Digital services like Impulse are fantastic venues for them.

I've bought apps from Impulse before (Windowblinds, Objectdesktop), but by and large? I buy games! I'd love to see more apps come on board, naturally (FRAPS would be a good one to see here), but for games Impulse is defintely one of my go-to places.

I'm eagerly awaiting Beat Hazard to come to Impulse, and am highly tempted to rebuy Devil May Cry 4 digitally so I don't have to worry about my disc anymore (the retail game requires disc in drive).
