Spell request: Chaotic mutations

Hi

I would like to request a spell for elemental. It was present in Master of Magic, but I can't remember the name. With the spell - let's call it chaotic mutations - you would make the target unit a "chaos" unit plus it would get a random mutation. I don't know if units will get attributes like "chaos" or "angelic", affecting their resistances to certain damage effects, but the mutations would be really cool.

I generally find spells giving +X to a stat with an upkeep of Y rather boring. Chaotic mutations was fun because it always gave a random mutation. The mutations were not just stat bonuses, there were mutations such as "horns" which gave an extra horn attack in melee or "wings" to give limited flying ability.

In short, I would like my spell books spicy and varied, thank you very much.

i'm always a fan of the x effect for y cost, but the random effect side of what you jsut said sounds fun.  That being said, would you only want positive effects from such a spell, or would you be happy will effect that had good and bad sides of just bad sides

eg. Spell has given you gills, congratz you can swim underwater.  Bad news though, your lungs got replaced by this and your in a desert map ^^.

The spells sound almost like a gamble type of this, and would be interesting to see ingame, if not in vanilla mode then maybe as a mod spell

Personally I would vote for mainly good effects with some bad side effects. If there are results that are just plain bad, people will be more tempted to do save & reload.

For an interesting take on this sort of spell, see the Chaos line of magic from the FfH Mod.  I think most of the mutations there are good, though there are some that offer tradeoffs like you mentioned.

when you say FfH mod, are you speaking of the Fall from Heaven mod for civ4? I only ask cause i hadn't heard of it so wanted to make sure my googling skills were up to scratch:P

Your googling skills work just fine.  Yes, Fall From Heaven for Civ4:BTS.  There are also a plethora of mod-mods as well.

Eh, Doms3 players probably remember of the spell  "Crossbreeding". Basically you "combined/merged" different creatures via magery to create superior beings. It was a hella fun spell. :D

That Crossbreeding spell sounds great too! I really like spells that have a flavor to them.. chaotic magic being really chaotic in nature and so forth. The worst nightmare for the spells would be to have nature spell Stoneskin for +2 armor, chaos spell Demonic armor for +2 armor, dark magic spell Night's shroud for +2 armor... Identical effects with just different names. Hopefully the different schools of magic have a different feel when playing.

How about you get 1 positive and 1 negative effect by default? To avoid reload-spam. So maybe your armor got upped a little, now you move a little slower. Or you grew another arm so you can do another attack, but you hit slightly weaker too cause of momentum. Obviously the positive should be better than the negative. Depending on the unit, one mutation would be stronger than the other so there's plenty of incentive to get that ultimate unit still.
