Will you buy it?

To be honest I will first download the game from a torrent site... and if i like it i WILL buy it :) .. i've done that with

The Witcher, Mass effect, fallout 1 2... NOT 3! :) those guys deserved every penny

If you play and enjoy without paying ... not only are you stealing... you are decreasing the chance of a sequel ....

I am from Europe / Bulgaria and here a game costs about 10-15% of a monthly salary... so we only buy games that do deserve it.. and sadly most of the time even those great games we download and play ... for free :(

I know very few people who actually bought a game :(

please dont spend money on copyright protection.. its 100% waste of money..... there isnt a single game on earth that hasnt been cracked.... and installing a cracked game is sometimes easier then the original one...

.... i thought the point of gaming companies was to sell and improve games not to have them stolen.

So. Allow me to straighten this out here.

- You're announcing intention to pirate the game initially.

- You're asking Stardock, who are absolutely stupendous developers with an amazing track record, to not add copy protection so that you may pirate it more easily?

- You promote buying games that people enjoy having pirated them, because it produces a sequel, and that is stealing.

- You say most people (and I'll give you this, I suppose) can't afford a game because of salaries and real life issues, in the meantime making a case to never pay for a game.

I've already bought it. Stardock deserves it, both for their previous work (IE I trust them to make an excellent game) and because even if it isn't the Citizen Kane of Gaming (don't hurt me!) it will still be a great game. I can only imagine, and or hope, that most of the other people on this forum feel the same way.

If you'd bothered to look up Stardock, you'll find that they have probably the best copy protection policy of any major company.  Buy it from the shop = no copy protection.

In the long run, the pirates are going to wreck the experience for everyone else.

People have been screaming about Ubisoft's DRM but you know what? Their sales are WAY up on those titles versus the titles that don't have that DRM.  Every publisher I know of is seriously looking at what Ubisoft did.

Look how many people are perfectly happy with Steamworks in their games already? Sure, you just have to be online to play the game (thus far, I have yet to see a single Steamworks -- as opposed to Steam -- from a third party that works offline. I could be wrong but I can't think of any because that's the whole point of their DRM - validation on startup).

And that's only the start. Wait until all games are streaming data from the servers. How you going to pirate that?  People say you can't stop piracy. Those people are not programmers (or very good ones).  I could make Elemental effectively unpirateable easily if I just had the AI server-based.  You going to write your own AI server? Some warez guys gonna do it for you? I don't think so.  But that's the future IF casual piracy ever becomes the norm.

On Stardock games, we can put out retail versions with no copy protection - at North American retail - because of two reasons: a) Our demographic buys games even if they could pirate them easily and Our culture has a high respect for intellectual property.

But where I can't sell my stuff I won't work on it. Will Elemental work in China? No idea. Don't care. They don't buy stuff unless you absolutely force them to do it (i.e. micro DLC payments which I'm not willing to get into right now).

But these warez guys who think that piracy is something that IP creators will "just have to put up with" are fooling themselves. The Ubisoft thing should be a wake up call because as draconian as it is, IT WORKS FOR THEM.

Quote from Frogboy from another thread.  Still want to pirate this game?

And you know what?  People like you disgust me.  If you can't afford a game, then don't play it.  It's as simple as that.

Go get yourself banned. :banhammer:

Take your pick.

Asking for particular features elsewhere then making an "I'll steal your game unless it perfectly pleases me" ultimatum is not the best idea. You'll find we don't respond well to threats. You do not deserve to have commercial games for free regardless of your location or financial situation; they're a luxury entertainment product.

We will probably release a demo sometime in the months following the final release. If that is not enough of a taste to tell you if the game is worth $50USD, then wait for a sale or live with it.

This is just sad.  Including Frogboys quoted response  that Bill_Door posted.  Had no idea he felt that way.   No one I know wants to steal games or anything else.

Go down Ubisofts path then you will lose at least one paying customer here.  Maybe there are so many people who buy these products regardless of DRM schemes that Frogboy does not mind losing those who do care.  I don't know how this will all evolve and hopefully this is just a short hiccup in history of PC's and gaming.

I think its been said many times in the past by many different people:  Those who will steal, will continue to do so regardless of what products or items being sold.  If you lump the paying customer into this category, like Ubisoft, then you insult all your customers.  Of course many don't know or care.  Not everyone can be pc centric or even cares about pc's in general.  Maybe I'm just living in the past and can't see the writing on the wall from Frogboys perspective.  If so Frogboy, I apologize ahead of time.  These issues are very complicated and decisions on what to do about them should never be rushed.

As long as Stardock has demo version's of games then the consumer has the chance to look first, then purchase if test run feels good.  Keep this and you will continue to grow as a company(along with the product being solid, and continued support for said product).

Side comment on Luckmann's avatar.  Capitalism has always been around.  Same with Socialism.  Name me a time in history when people didn't trade, buy or barter?  You can't.  Same with Socialism.  When did people isolate themselves completely?  Never.  Otherwise our species would have become extinct along time ago.  People who disagree with this I feel are living in their own fantasy world.  Maybe there are apects or variations to each of these ISM's which people disagree with but those are just sliders on the overall LIFESCALE.

Luckmann, not flaming you, just commenting on your current avatar because of Orvidos post under yours.  I think your presence makes the Elemental forums a better place.  Along with Raven X, Wintersong, Tasunke, DemianskyFrogboy, etc.

EvilScience, I don't know how you truly feel about this subject but I think you would like to purchase games, install them and not have to worry about disks being mandatory to load each and every time you play a game.  That is my wish also.  What you need to do though, is use Demo free versions for trial that Stardock and other game companies provide.  If you don't like the demo then don't buy the game.  If you do then purchase.  No need to go to torrent sites for this.  If the software company does not provide a demo of their product then don't but it, period.  They don't deserve or want your support.  Don't steal it because you are angry or any other reason.  If a car company doesn't want you to test drive their vehicle before purchase does that mean you will then go out and steal one?  I don't think so..Good luck over there and realize that games are a choice and not a requirement to living a good and healthy lifestyle.
