Necromancy?

For those that have already seen the beta (I'm stuck waiting for beta 2 before I can join the fun!) does elemental offer necromancy or the equivalent as an option for the player? I saw that there are elemental forms of magic, and they have light and dark aspects, but what that actually means in terms of gameplay or flavor I havent' been able to see for myself......yet!

Not that I've seen so far.  But then I'm not familiar with the lore on the "fallen" that are in the game, and the option to play as them or against them has been turned off in Beta 1 for quite a while now.  So it might be there, but not so far.

thinking of HOMM or MOM. There is the 4 types of magic and then the white and black magic, holy/necromancy.

But this game just shows the 4 elements.

Well i guess we can just customize and create another 2 schools, if need be. But be happy to see the holy and dark magic already in the game

Depending on their allegiance, players build up life or death mana that can be used, in conjunction with the elemental shards that they control (earth, air, fire and water) to cast spells. What spells they know depends on what books of magic they have along with which of the spells in those books they have learned.  Spells require mana as well as control of a certain number of different types of shards.

(from the "gameplay" section of this site)

So I assume that in addition to the 4 elemental types of magic, there are also Life and Death magic (for Kingdoms and Empires, respectively).

It has also been said that your army can be comprised of any type of creature as a regular infantry. I assume this includes anything from zombies to ninja spiders.

We'll find out for sure when beta 2 hits, this thread is just assumptions. At least the question was answered: no one knows because that part of the game hasn't been made available yet.

well saw screen shots of the 4 elements and there was also a creation and destruction one.

hmmm could green also fit under creation and red under destruction. was looking more for white and black magic

Magic source and magic effect are not as clear cut as a mana for each type. Dark magic in this game will likely allow some form of necromancy but it will have to use the the four elements as well. Also at least one of the spell books will deal with the animation of corpses if not other forms of necromancy. Don't forget that these guys are pros. They wouldn't leave out such a huge part of magic.

According to the fact that Empires use the Death Magic I think that Necromancy will be the part of their art of sorcery. It is very suitable for their military doctrine and social principes - to use all resources they have without exception. And corpses are useful in many cases - zombie soldiers without fear and mercy, skeletal workers who never get tired, invisible ghost scouts, mages transforming themself to immortal liches and vampires... I think, it is not simple coincidence that one of the Empires - Resoln - is also named "Wraiths" as a type of undead creatures.

That is as you say a bit overpowerd
but it would be nice to have a sorcer who rais a few skeletons out of the ground and kill

of course they are not surposed to be too good because els you can make a army of skeletons for a while and destroy everything*_*

Gotta have my skeletal army!

Prepare holy weapons men, the undead army is near! :P

I don't think that it would be too overpowered because you can counter most of weak-medium undead even with fire, not to mention some "Light magic". So it's a problem of mages and equipment. There can also be penalty on sp for controlling undead.

In a demo video released, I believe, on June 3, the narrator showed a Sovereign casting some sorta "life" spell so he could start his town into a thriving greenery and not some wasteland.  I assume by the merit of symmetry in fantasy that there will be some kind of death spell like that, performing the reverse.

Even if it is that limited (as in, if tile value is all we can do with life/death), it seems a likely route for both mods and possible expansions.

Life and Death aren't ignored as concepts, is what I'm seeing.  If even just this small role for now.

I wholeheartedly request necromancy.  At least put the assets in there so I can make a mod!  I almost always play the necromancers.  Not because I like dead things, but because I like being able to summon an army.  And really, it's not much different.

Instead of a troll in my army, or dragons, I have lots and lots of undead.  Skeletons could be weak/melee only, but some of the more advanced magics could have liches, wraiths, etc.  I personally really, really like this idea.  I know it seems stereotypical, but cmon, they're EVIL.

And it would alleviate the "they're bad.  They're just like us, but bad" that the Empire human race might experience.  (though we haven't gotten to play as empire, so that's kinda up in the air)

Stardock has already demonstrated that they are at least willing to consider alternative creatures:

Swamp Lord

Which I think (personally) is fantastic (that screenshot is pretty awesome).  I think the fallen is an excellent way of exploring "alternate" creatures.  These will probably be summonable, because can you imagine outfitting something like THAT?  I'm not sure that the unit designer could handle it.  Thus, I might hope for some summonable undead, but not a race/normal units

Here's what we know about the fallen:

Resoln - Wraiths.  Motivation for necromancy right there.  I don't think they have special spells per race, but if there's one that does necromancy, this is our best bet.

Creatures we know the fallen employ:

Edars

Edars

Trolls

Trolls

Umberdroths

umberdroths

Daemons

Daemons

Sions

Sions

Seemingly undead wolves

DireWolf

Bears

 DireBear

Now, of these, the wolves and bears seem ordinary, along with Trolls.  But it seems like Stardock is trying to move away from an "elves and dwarves" setting, so we may not see necromancy persay, but I do hope that we see some equivalent.

Maybe breeders of underdroths?  That would be cool.
