Gaining Experience through diffrent means.

something i have been thinking about is ways to get XP.  as far as i know, you can only get XP by killing stuff(i may be wrong about this).  i also think that you should get quest XP as well.  i am hoping that there will be quests as well that do not result in just fighting things, but maybe making tough decisions.  things that might affect the game world itself.

Lets say you have a settlement and it becomes infected with a disease and everyone starts turning to zombies and begins to attack other settlements that are closer.  now everyone isn't turned at once, but at a slow rate of maybe 5 citizens a turn.  you have 2 choices, you could burn the settlement down, which is the easy choice or you could try to find a potion or magic spell scroll that can get rid of this plague. this would be the long road.

now you have to juggle whats the best thing to do in this situation, time is ticking on your populace, the faction closest to you is getting pissed because zombies keep attacking their settlement and waiting to long may cause war(not to mention that the zombies carry the disease and each time a settlement is attacked there is a chance of infection)

if you play this scenario a certain way, there will be no fighting at all, but i think that the hero going on this quest should get some experience as well.

what do you think?

I agree that quests should give experience.  It should be quests and combat that give experience, but only those two things (essence should be de-linked from leveling to make this balanced).  Independent trading heroes should get more powerful as they acquire more gold (as they can trade and purchase more), but the only people who should be leveling are adventurers and warriors.

i agree, the quests and combat should give you exp. however if they really wanted to try something i think it would be cool if you had other areas of exp, like we have of research. i mean my wiz that is back at my capital researching spells should level up his spell capability while the farmer should get some exp for his str and farming, ect.

though there is the thing from age of wonders that i did like, where the heroes gained 1 exp per day. that way if the hero wasn't always in battle it wasn't a early level when you needed it to defend, but not necessarily the crazy power that you had at the end you had from the heroes that were always fighting.

Agree.  Would like to see small amounts experience from quests, other achievements like research & building things, and even (very small amounts) from just living.

I think that Combat, Quests, Random Events (choosing correctly), and Leading and Army should all gain exp.

By leading an army, I mean that, other than the experience you gain from your own combat/kills, you gain experience from how well your army did over-all during the battle. // Perhaps you could even *magically* lead a battle from some tower somewhere, without having to be nearby.

hey that's not a bad idea, maybe if you attack some one with the you as the sov and an army.  if you come out of the tactical battles with very little losses you get bonus xp.

retain 100% of your army after a battle - big bonus

retain 75% of your army after a battle - moderate bonus

retain 50% - small bonus.

less than 50% - no bonus.

Retain 90% of the battle rating (huge bonus)

Retain 67% of the battle rating (moderate bonus)

Retain 50% of the battle rating (small bonus)

less than 50% (no bonus)

The amount of experience a Huge, Moderate, or Small bonus receives should be based upon how important the battle is. This could be determined by the size and strength of your army, as well as the size and strength of your opponents army.

For instance, 3 soldiers killing 10 spiders with no losses should be relatively small bonus ... while 200 soldiers fighting off 3 different armies totaling near 1000 soldiers should get a very high bonus experience (even for small bonus).

Ergo, I think that (20% of total battle experience) is a good starting point for moderate bonus ... while Huge bonus is 80% more and small bonus is 50% less.

yeah the more challenging the fight, vs less casualties.  that would be a great incentive to fight with better tactics.

Completing quests should give xp.

End of lwarmonger's quote

Agreed.

While Quests and Combat are certainly primary (definite) sources of experience ... I should also think that Leading an Army well (say, less casualties) should reward the designated general with extra experience.

Additionally, Random Kingdom Events could also increase experience (although not as important as previous three)
