Other than shops, yes it would be cool to create equipment (like you do for units) for your Champions and Sovereigns.
Likely, however, items from Questing and Shops will be often better than whatever you can forge at the time. Still, forging items yourself (mundane items that any soldier could use) should be a viable (probably cheaper) alternative
