Elemental: Rebuilding a civilization

Elemental: Rebuilding a civilization

Highway

A century has passed since the cataclysm.

Tar-Thela is slain. Curgen the Dred’nir is gone. Talax is gone. The combined armies of the west aided by the last Emperor of men in the east, Amarian were successful in stopping the Titans from opening a passageway to their native world. However, the breaking of such a powerful spell broke the world.

In the aftermath of the cataclysm, nearly all life on Elemental perished. A century later, life has begun to return to the world. Scattered groups of people bravely work to rebuild. Patches of viable land are quickly claimed and defended. It is a time of chaos and lawlessness.

Emperor Amarian survived the cataclysm along with his 8 year old daughter, Procipinee. Amarian discovered the ability for Channelers like himself to sacrifice some of their own life force to restore the land thus being able to control the time and place of the rise of a new kingdom. This knowledge was passed on far and wide so that any surviving Channelers could help restore the world.

The five Kingdoms of men in the west – Pariden, Altar, Gilden, Capitar and Tarth, led by Channelers have taken the first steps. With their key insights, they recognize which places are best suited to be restored and from there order things as they see fit.

Across the landscape, people hear of the new kingdoms and flock to their banners, searching for a better life. Still, in the wilds, there are lonely manors, estates, fortresses and even petty kingdoms that have laid claim to the patches of land where life was not extinguished utterly.

Sounds awesome. Two small things though.

1) Maybe it's the "Highlander" fan in me, but I think Curgen should be spelled with a "K". "Kurgen the Dred’nir" just looks cooler to me then "Curgen the Dred’nir".

2) "In the aftermath of the cataclysm, nearly all life on Elemental perished." , calling the Planet/World "Elemental" doesn't sound good. It sounds extremely generic. Calling the Game Elemental makes sense, calling the world the Game takes place on Elemental sounds cheesy.

Aside from those two minor details, well done.

I agree with Raven on the world name.

Also, sometimes it's better to take combinations of words we know to make place names (or people) rather than ones that are entirely fiction...a good mix might be best, i.e.,  Ironhough, Stelewerk, Thistlecairn etc...sounds somewhat exotic but familiar at the same time...imho, that is!

Anyway, keep up the good work!

Sorry Raven, both items 1 and 2 are core parts of the lore, not subject for change. :)

Besides, we live on a planet that we named after dirt.

It's definitely dirt that is named after our planet.

Dirt (or earth) also happen to be nouns...

He makes a good point. Giving a place a name that's also an adjective just sounds weird. It makes you want to try and pronounce it in a strange way to distinguish it from the usual meaning. But then it sounds like a cheese.

Isn't the Moon already made of cheese though? So calling the planet something named after a cheese would just sound....cheesy...

I'm afraid I only pre-ordered recently so I'm not up on the lore. Are these Kingdom's supposed to be particularly distinct? Because, name-wise, three of them have the syllable "tar" in them, and four of them have an "ar". This may be why people are finding them generic - because they're phonetically quite similar.

Hard to tell...They aren't regular or popular names. Of course they aren't of star quality. Pardon me if I don't compare them to something more rare. To me, they are not similar. Rather that than something bazzar or far-out like "Lizards" or "Wizards" or something... Harsh, but true....

Well okay. Point taken. But your "ar"s there still make up less than 5% of the total text (and two of them don't even sound the same because they're modified by 'e's and the "ar" in lizards and wizards and regular and popular is pronounced more like "er.", at least in my accent etc. etc.)

But there are only 11 syllables in the five kingdom names and so over 1/3 of them are "ar". And they're all the same phoneme, not just the same two letters.

Also your entire post is in English. My point was that if the kingdoms are similar then the names can reasonably be similar but if they're supposed to be representing different cultures with different languages then they should probably have more distinct sounding names.

It doesn't bother me. I don't care about the back story. To me the names could be anything. I'll be playing it like a boardgame. It was just a theory to try and explain why people might have had the reaction they did.

I know - was just having a little fun at your expense :) .. har har :)

The 5 Kingdoms (and 1 fallen kingdom) are all "Men" - so they should have a relatively similar culture (or at least a common background) - the 4 remaining fallen were all created by the Titans a relatively short time ago, so it's possible they were named by the Men, or took there languages are derivatives of that spoken by "men".... just a theory of course...

I think the names and everything is kinda cool! It is a brand new universe.. Some people complained about not being able to remember all the different names and stuff.. Just wait until you play the game (or maybe just read the book that will be released in august i think). It is an exciting world full of interesting history and compelling stories.

Frogboy, thanks for updating us almost daily. I feel like we get closer with the developers and the team behind Elemental.. What other game company keeps their "fans" updated in the same degree as Stardock does?? None!

I check the dev journals every day, cuz i know chanses are, there will be new information about the game progress, or the game lore! Love it. So thanks again!

Saw that "Elemental" as a planet name was discussed.. At least Elemental isn't called "Death Star" or "Na'Vi". I noticed that in the beta 1G, you can choose to name the world of which you are going to play in; whatever you want to call it! So if you don't like "Elemental".. Call it something else. You can ofcourse make your own sovereign and faction as well.. Kinda like this (not so serious thing i did with the beta).

(Hope i don't get in trouble for posting a screenshot from my beta 1G version).

[lol, edited my post a little bit].

[edit2: yes, that sure is a radioactive/bright, green man indeed].

Could at least the Continent be named something different? Like Thanadar (after death) or Agrolan (after open spaces)?

Well, I guess that's true..lol. I can't fault the logic. The game's going to kick all kinds of ass so I guess I can get over the name of the world. Keep on rockin :)

Edit PS: and I know the reason it's "Set in Stone" is because the Book's already being published and it can't be changed. You can't fool me! See, this is why you need my vast knowledge on hand all the time so things like this don't happen. I work cheap, really. ;) j/k

Sorry to go abit offtopic but i do love the artwork of elemental...so beautiful and charming. yet realistic not like some 'cartoony' graphics but not too gritty...more real and yet more fantasy very alluring.
