Game Development:where should resources go?

  To start, want to say that I have been pc gaming since 1983/84.  The first games I played was on a friends pc and I don't have the foggiest as to what make or model.  Tape drive though..think cassette tapes.  Another friend had a pc with orange text and floppy disc.  I didn't actually own my own pc until 92 or 93.  It was given to me by the first tech co I worked for.  It was a 286x from Compaq.

  First type of pc games I played were text based(briefly), mostly Adventure, then some statregy games and role-playing.  I also played a couple of arcade games before seeing or hearing of pc's.  Umm, Space Invaders..(cringe now at thought).  I enjoyed SSI's Pool of Radiance(Gold Box), Warcraft, Age of Empires(esp when farming became easy instead of having to constantly manage the workers like in the first version), Doom, Unreal Tournemant(and this where I started to notice modding as part of gaming, can't remember what other titles were being modded then), many other shooters, rpg's, rts's, etc.

  Initially, we gamed by taking turns in the chair.  Whoever was in the chair got to play, when we lost or died it was next person's turn(yea, time in the chair was uneven).  Later, we all own our own computers and are playing by ourselves. Then, we starting using BBS's.  I enjoyed the Pit, didn't really care for Trade Wars at first but liked it later, etc..Around the time of the BBS's we started lan gaming.  That was incredible.  Lan gaming just seemed like the ultimate to me.  Intitially, it was only 2 or 3 of us then got to be like 6-8 in 2 or 3 rooms and all connected by local hub.  No delay.  It was fantastic and I will always think of that time as being great.  For the last 5-6 years I was doing some MMO gaming, no lans, and some revisiting of games I missed or cherished.  I played MoM again on DOSbox.  Bought the Boxed sets of many rpg's I loved.

  Now to the point of this post.  I want this game to succeed in a big way because I love fantasy, fantasy gaming, strategy gaming, gaming in general and I wish Stardock and other developer's continued success in what some would call an oversaturated market.  What I remember about pc gaming might not be important to todays gaming or the futures.  However, of all the great games that I have enjoyed over time, the ones that have multiple options for gamer's have brought the greatest value to the experience.  Some people enjoy single player gaming and single player gaming only.  Others like to play only multiplayer games.  I enjoy the diversity of gaming options and think that the greatest game that will ever be created(to date) should have all the options.  I also don't want the game to die a horrible death because of it.  If it is not possible ,due to time requirements, technological hurdles or money; then I would want to see every effort made to make the single player campaign scenario a transcendant experience.  I wouldn't want a game to add features it doesn't really support.  I haven't played a local lan game in years but I still expect gamers to love that experience.  Dial up networking is something I'm currently not doing in gaming but that needs it own real support as well.

 I know Stardock is serious about its games.  I am sure most of you agree.  I would like to know to what level of importance you place on single player vs. multiplayer, local lan vs, wan, and mod scenarios vs. Stardock Campaign Scenario?  Why?  Where would you place Stardock resources?

Singleplayer and LAN.

I'd like to play multiplayer ... if it has good support for a disconnected "play-by-email" style.  It doesn't have to actually involve email; I just want to be able to log in once a day (any time), queue up my moves, and then have them executed when the turn timer expires (probably once a day).  Immediate execution might be palatable, but I'd have to see it in action, and I'd still want the turns to be forced to a slow clock.  The people I want to play with are busy and many of them live in distant time zones; getting us all online for a 36-hour marathon would be impossible, but we could manage to play the game in daily chunks without too much trouble.

Since I don't expect to get that, I think I'll mostly or exclusively play single-player.  Maybe I'll set up a LAN game with my wife, if we can manage to schedule our time so that works out, but I bet it won't.

Most likely will never even fire up a single game of multiplayer.

1. SP

1A. LAN

3. MP (if it's done well and games don't take forever.)

Actually it's working perfectly, if you are playing with people whom you know. IE. You got their MSN/Xfire/whatever [OR, Stardock's new Impulse Reactor! -> Perfect choice since it's integrated into the game..], so that when all of the people are online and ready to play again, the host simply reloads the saved game. It's hella fun actually, but it's not for everyone of course. I find these kind of games much more enjoying than the play-by-email games for example. Good example: Civ4 MP games.

MP with people I can talk to (got their Msn/Xfire and such) is a blast. Random people....no....except for RTS & FPS where you get points when they quit.

Seems me and Tormy are on the same page. I predict lots of MP between us forumers. And after some games we'll drown this place in balance complaints }:)

Single Player Primary

Lan with friends Secondary.

MP is a distant third.  I usually don't touch MP, but stardock gaming community tend to be more mature than some of the others.

For what it's worth:

Scale from 1 to 10:

1 = Couldn't care less

5 = Care some

10 = Absolutely crucial

Single Player: 10

MP over Internet: 5

MP over LAN: 5

SP Single player is what makes a great game.

Most Great or Epic games focus on SP and model MP after SP to give people an indepth experience to me SP comes first MP after.

  Thanks for the feedback everyone.  Single player is the general consensus and focus.  Hotseat,co-op, Local LAN, online multiplayer are all nice features if a game can afford them from the start and doesn't detract from the single player game.  Also lamdaman mentioned 'Play by e-mail' for multiplayer/single-player(added) for those who have busy schedules.

  Thank you Frogboy, for that nugget.:D

  Tormy and Campaigner, I would definitely like a match with you guys when possible.  There are many here who I would enjoy the competition of losing and winning against.

  Sethfc, I would agree with you except..I remember playing Unreal for short time and not really being all that excited.  It was single player focused fps.  Then they created Unreal Tournement and it was hugely different in scale, gameplay, fun, and it was all about the multiplayer.  Yes you could play against the bots in singleplayer but the whole focus started with multiplayer/lan and the gameplay online was far greater than if you played singleplayer by yourself.  I know these are different games with different mechanics but really when it all comes down to it, no AI is ever going to be as skillful, ingenius, challenging as another human challenger.

Since I am hoping this game will take over my Favorite game of all time on my List (MoO2). It must have a Hotseat mode so when my brother comes to visit we can play.  Thats all I care about.

My presonal preference would be.

1st - Multiplayer lan - I Mostly like to play these games with people i know, its more fun beating somone if you know you can also remind them of their crushing defeat in a weeks time. Also you can develop house rules and a style of play that suits you all much easier.

2nd - Single player - For when im on my own, and i want to practice and try out different ways of crushing my friends.

3rd - Online - I might try it online, but i expect it to be like most online games, hard to find someone of equal skill level, and full of obnoxious, whiney, iritating people that will suck all the fun out of everything. :)
