Item Forging

I'm not sure I have seen much on this facet of gameplay. I was reading about Dominions 3 here:

http://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?threadid=3241694&userid=0&perpage=40&pagenumber=3

Check out the post by Lonjon near the end of the page. Expecting small armies of super-tough heros he describes a strategy to combat them by forging specific items and using specific spells to produce mages with crossbows capable of causing blindness with extreme precision. Blind giants don't fight too well....

Will item forging in Elemental have the same depth as in Dom 3, which to be fair would be a huge achievement.

*edit* for anyone who plays Dom and knows, whats the big deal with Carcator the Pocket Lich? 25 Death Gems for +2 research? Sounds like a dodgy deal to me.

I know there will be an item editor included with the game..... however I think it will be based completely outside of the actual game, as a modding tool. There still might be some sort of "forge" in the game, but the devs aren't talking.....

Carcator is casting his spells independently from the hero in battle as death 4 or 5 caster if i remember correctly.

As a mod tool is required so we can create items without the need to play a game (or use notepad to classic modding). But I really hope to see in game forging. Would feel weird not to have it. At least in single player, please?:pout: I mean, come on, we can create our own units in game...

I imagine that if Master of Magic had item forging mechanism, there will be a much more detailed one in Elemental as well as mod tools.

God, I hope so. I really want to make magical barding for all of my elephant cavalry. And bear cavalry. And elephant-bear cavalry.

I hope we will have tools to make elephant-bear cavalry. I really do.

My impression from early (autumn '08, winter '09) talk was that enchanted gear for regular combat units was a given. But that was before the Great Economy Thread led to a 'simpler' approach for collecting, refining, and distributing resources. We should hopefully see signs of whether there's been a reversal of that old goal when 1G finally appears on Impulse--unless the basic magic system component excludes any of the mechanisms the devs have planned to enable things like archer squads with enchanted bows and so forth.

What still seems like a dev secret and/or open question is whether the game will have an analog to MoM's item creation, which enabled you to create major magic items (more or less 'artifact level' in D&D terms) for champion units. I want both forms of item creation.

I think that would be part of the "unit equipment" editor, as opposed to a hero item forge. I'm a picky bugger :)

Ah! Esentially a self casting magic weapon. Nice to see that finally somebody automated the magic  wand.

<-- Huge DOM fan, the options and strategy involved are nearly unlimited.

The number of units, items and spells available in dominions would be hard to achieve in a more modern looking game. It would still be epic if Stardock managed to pull it off though.

Having custom item forging for your heroes is a standard of pretty much every fantasy TBS game ever. I am sure elemental will have it. And i am pretty confident that there will be at least some kind of magical weaponry for your regular troops.

And zombie penguin cavalry > *

Let's hope so, but I'd be very surprised if it weren't.

Well, I don't know about you, but I'm going to cross-breed until I put all of Earth's mundane mounts to shame.

The speed of an cheetah. The tusks, size, and weight of elephants. The orneriness of boars. The badassness of bear claws.

I call them Cheleboarbears!
