How do i maximize performance?

I play large maps with rather high detail. It gets quite laggy on a 25000 area map with about 80 planets and 7 players.

and 3 pirate bases. and 4 systems.

Anyone know what to do to get the most out of performance or know what eats up performance?

E.g like do ships or planets eat more performance? does map size matter etc?

....Lower graphic settings? lol

Reduce the texture detail.  I find that it makes no difference to my enjoyment of the game at all since I'm normally looking at overviews of single gravity wells and never have time to really zoom in and smell the roses unless a game has been decided and I'm just mopping up sore losers who refuse to quit and call it gg ("good games").

The other thing you can do is to put Sins on one CPU core with high priority and to put your other large programs (Internet browser, etc.) on your other CPU core using the Windows Task Manager.  Sins is pretty much a single threaded game, so it's going to hog one of the cores and it might as well have its own dedicated core with a high priority.

How do you do that anyway, I need to try that out sometime when I solve this "white dots" issue.

Keep your Empire Tree trimed and neat. Dont have everything pinned. Pin only the planets/fleets/SB you need. The Empire Tree can suck FPS in longer/bigger/larger games. The less the game and CPU has to keep up with on the Empire Tree the better FPS you get.

Hey...I have an option on my graphics control panel "Threaded Optimization", how does that work or will work with performance? I kinda figured since Sins is single threaded that this would force it to use multiple threads or something, lol.

And how should I do this "set game to one CPU" thing...

Open the task manager

Select Sins

Right Click: Set Affinity / Priority

Well, just wanted to be sure, because I got the message that it may cause system instability...so...yeeeeaaaah. None of my other prgrams are using up either CPUs either, so I dunno if I'll do it anyways...

Yeah, there's the warning. Never had an instability by changing priority or affinity, though. However, at least on my machine I didn't notice any effect, but a core i7 975 isn't standard these days and people with other machines did report that it's helping a bit.

Figured I'll make sure before doing this, seeing how my computer is SLOW after exiting out of the game for a minute or two. So it shouldn't mess the computer up if I assign EVERYTHING to CPU #1 (like, there are SYSTEM programs and whatnot...and there's also System Idle) while Sins takes over CPU #2 right? Or is there some things that i should just leave alone.

Anyone?...lol sorry, but yeah I wanna know this before actually trying it, don't want to mess my computer up.

Usually my computer is a bit slow after a long game. I assume its b/c its still dumping all the memory and such. Nothing long term wrong with it.

Howdy people,

my specs are:

intel i7 975

6gb corsair ram

evga gtx285 (196.21 nvidia drivers)

I run massive maps (133 planets, 5 stars 10 players) and it lags till its almost space empires 5 on a vista/win7 system, which is to say its down to the single digit frames. Yet, the game only uses 13% of my cpu, uses 1.3gb of ram and a whopping 2-6% of my GPU usge.

Is this normal?

is there a way to actually make the game use more system resources?

Thanks for your time,

az.

Ya that is normal

lol you think you are running slowly, 100 planets, 10 player 150k fleet supply each, I am just waiting half an hour just to select ships lol

hahaha thats crazy, id love a screenshot of some of the battles you have but i suspect that would be an accidental rebbot computer button.

Thanks for the response,
