Preview of Magic in Elemental

Preview of Magic in Elemental

We’ll be talking about this a lot more soon but I wanted to alleviate some concerns on how magic will work in Elemental.

There are over a dozen different books of magic in the game.

When a player selects their sovereign (their sorcerer, channeler of magic), they can choose which books of magic they want. Each book will have a cost to it. So you can spend a lot of points on having lots of books or use those points to make your channeler more powerful.

In addition, based on what race you are, you will get a book of magic and based on which allegiance you choose (Empire or Kingdom) you will get a book.

Example: The Empires get the book of death magic. The Kingdoms get the book of life magic.

Then there are books of magic you can research in the research area.

There are also books of magic spread across the world that you can find via quests and other events.

I won’t even get into how many spells we have. I’m not even sure myself as there are currently many pages of spells.

Some spells are for tactical combat. Others are used globally.

Obviously, what spells you can learn are based on what spell books you have in your possession.  Over time, we plan to keep adding more and more spells to existing books and release additional spell books for free after the game is available as players help us think of new and interesting spells.

We’ll talk more soon about how the magic system works in detail but hopefully this gives you an idea of the direction we’re going.

I hope that Elemental will have awesome animations Age of Mythology style. That game had some AWESOME spells for its day. Earthquake and meteor were just beautifully destructive. (The ground would ripple at an insane rate and buildings would crumble my god it is so sweet!)

The animations will be customizeable through a particle editor. I think it will be entirely out-of-game, though.... and I have no idea what the editor will be capable of.

I'm very enthused at the possibility of each spellbook reflecting the personality of it's creator.

For example: I'd like to see the book of Alexander the desert wanderer as a book that reflects Alexander's needs as someone who wandered the desert in his day, and a book that reflects his abilitites as a master of transformation with a focus in animals.  So there would be

a spell that summoned a wall of scorpians to protect an encampment for a few turns

a spell to transform huge amonts of water into a sack full of teeth,

a spell that turns troops into camels to allow them to traverse arid regions quickly with few supplies,

a spell that transforms sandstorms into locust swarms which could in turn be controlled by the caster and so on.

The book should reflect its creator.

It's kind of weird that this thread is called "Preview of Magic in Elemental" when there are no screenshots nor videos XD

I'd rather have the thousand words than a pic ;)

I like words but um Frogboy mentioned wisps. Can we see them? O:)   Just thought I would ask.

I hope we get some interesting spells with really off-the-wall effects

This sounds great! :) I also hope that the animations will be nice-looking enough so that you always want to see the effect of the spell and not just think about the game effect in numbers.

What would be really cool is if you could find the Necronomicon through a difficult quest ... Just a small hint ... ;P

So... Exactly like how Master of Magic did it? Sounds good to me.

I'm hoping for the Khost Amojiin myself.

Sounds great. Kinda like master of magic but bigger with more options. Its like they took your vanilla ice cream and put fudge and bananas on it. mmmmm.

Way to necro a thread that's over 6 months old.  Seems to be occurring more frequently lately.

There is also an entire book called the Book of Curses. You can turn a target unit into a sheep for N turns.

Another idea to this. Lets say someone casting a high level morphing spell, such as sheep, instead of wearing off after n amount of turns the victim is required to obtain some sort of potion or blessing from an higher level npc in order to revert to his/her original form

Also I hope this particular spell is not limited to sheep. Maybe frog, dog, boar etc. giving different effects to stats. That could go the other way too, lets say you curse someone into an ogre or dragon boosting combat abilities but taking away from other bonuses.

I just got here and this game sounds so badass. I've been waiting a long time for a rpg/strategy/city sim like this.

Hehe. This thread is actually talking about the old game, War of Magic. Fallen Enchantress will work slightly differently. I think you must be using the search feature to find these posts. You should take a look in the Fallen Enchantress category in the developer journals section. Those are about the new game.

Note that this thread is nearly two years old.

How fitting that the oldest post before the new necro was a necro post too :-)
