Archievements ???

Well i think most of the people have played a Stardock game before and a typical feature of them are archievements, which you earn at the end of the game.

My Question is if there will be archievments in Elemental as well and if so i would like to make a suggestion.

The Problem with archievments is that they are mainly there to boost your ego,  but you cant really use it for the game. Now iam a person that doesnt care to much about my archievements AFTER a game, i would like to have archievments in the game WHILE i play.

An easy option for this would be City improvments (which would make the cities more unique )..for example:

-if you defend a city 50x vs attacking forces you would get maybe a triumphal Gate for the city boosting the defence some

-if you earn soandsomuch gold from trades with other nations you might get a golden street that gives a money bonus

-if you maybe do 20 assasinations/thieving/spying you could get a thief guild giving maybe a special unit

-if you clear out 20 monster lairs you could get an explorer guild that sells maybe unique items

and so on , i bet people would have alot ideas about that and the cities would get more unique + the archievments you earn in the game would be finally of use, they wouldnt be researchable but you would actually act in the world of Element to get them.

This should probably be in the unique cities post, but for achievements ala demigod... I would much rather if achievements earned in game could allow you to play with a 'gimped' character against even harder enemies. If you've earned many victories the game can't be too hard and require you getting a large bonus, although you should be able to capture the bonuses or half the benefit should be to you. Picture this:

Normal mode unlocked through playing tutorial
Hard unlocked from a victory in normal
etc.

Wipe out all enemies without a single loss
Underdog toggle 1: AI start with a random artifact power 1000

End the game with the lowest level sov
Underdog toggle 2: AI start with a barracks in their first city and 2 additional scouts

End the game with the smallest army
Underdog toggle 3: AI sov start with 1 extra level and 2 minor equips

End the game with the largest army and highest level sov
Underdog toggle 4: You started cursed by a witch, everything is hard to do for you and your empire. +50% troop training time, -25% production, -15% research, sov. stats significantly reduced. Find the witch to remove the curse. Let her live and the curse is removed and maybe she will be generous, kill her and perhaps you could gain something of hers (powerful spell, spell of cursing, artifact)

Win a game using only fire spells
Fire Toggle: Fire spells have gone wild, requirements for casting reduced, cost reduced. Enemy starts with a fire shard.
Etc for each element.

Create 1,000 undead in your journey.
Rival Necromancer: Another lusts for power and starts with a necromancy artifact set and a strong desire to bring undeath to the world. They also see you as a thorn in their side, escallating negative relations with every undead unit you create or destroy. (reduced to neutral not positive with increased living unit kills and sacrifices)

Create 1,000 beings of light (angels etc.)
Pure goodness: A being of pure angelic light and love has risen, with respect for life and the land. Also with an army of angels and a suit of holy armour. You start with "stained soul" and gain negative relations for every living unit killed and every resource you plunder. Expect raids of angels to destroy your mines if you continue. Holy wrath if you fight back.

10 Victories
All characters recieve additional points at civ creation. (2 for you, 4 for AI)

5 losses
You recieve 2 extra points at civ creation

Deal 100,000 points damage with your troops
AI start with armour techs

Deal 10x the enemy damage by game end.
Your race gains "without weapons" and becomes a race of monks, able to fight with fists, extra dodge and defence but no ranged attacks and unable to equip bladed or metal weapons. Gain several defensive spells and a temple. You'll need them if you are to succeed on your holy/unholy quest.

Live through 100,000 points of damage
AI gain an alchemists and begin with magic swords and a few techs, try to withstand that offensive.

Withstand 9/10 of all damage done in a single game.
Start with "barbarian" you are unable to equip armour, but gain a bonus to offense of 2 and speed of 1. Start at negative relations with all races.

Combine "barbarian" and "without weapons" to gain "warrior monks" Increased health, damage and speed. But start at war with all, unable to equip weapons and armour. All races gain guardians at capitals and are "on alert" +50% troop production and a random weapon tech. Tech fast for healing master warrior monks or go for troop buffs, you'll need them.

You could go on for hours, but I'm just picturing a game where you've won 50 times and now you play as a heavily weakened sov against hordes of enhanced enemies. But you can now become significantly stronger in the early game or endgame, capture the enemy buildings and artifacts and you can crush the remaining enemies. Play with a rival and it's almost like playing with a 'boss' race in play. I'd like token items too, something for visuals and just to say I'm playing against or have beaten the necromancer. Say a black cape if you've beaten the necromancer, glowing wings if you've beaten the angelic hordes... etc.

(I think he's refering to Demigod... not quite stardock but the shared forums makes it easy to mistake GPG for stardock)

I actually prefer that acheivements only provide a boost to your ego or your bragging rights. To me, making acheivements give bonuses or unlock content or anything similar can potentially make the game unbalanced or encourage certain types of play. If one acheivement gives a better bonus than the others, than people are naturally going to want to go for that acheivement over the others.

Also, Sins was made by Ironclad and published by Stardock, much like Demigod, just swap GPG for Ironclad.

How bout just beating the game? Is that not an achievement any more? I remember beating the first Homeworld and I was like wow that was freakin tough. I felt like i did something amazing there were no special achievements or rewards just you beat the game.

The only real purpose of Achievements is to keep people playing the game instead of doing other things (included playing other games). They should never give anything more than bragging rights. Anything else and you have complainers, cheaters...

If Elemental has any acheivements, it should be done Alpha Centauri style.

Brass Dragons- unsafe at any speed.

you mean the interludes? I liked them, although found they were distinctly functional... caused lots of planet growth. If you mean something else then I found it easy to forget.

Still, I love the extra sense of acomplishment with achievements. I wouldn't want any or many achievement to make the game easier I think everyone is agreed on that. Making the game harder however, isn't as objectionable. Still I suppose bragging rights should always be the main thing. Either that or presented as events/interludes ingame as Alpha Centauri did. Although they were very linear in that game, elemental could make them a little more diverse, even 2 or 4 paths would be nice. (if you simply activate them with normal progress).

Well, I don't know if you would call this 'bragging rights' but I wouldn't mind if achievements would give some extra cosmetic options like a different look for a building or unit...

That's what I was thinking with the 'defeated the necromancer' black cape option. Or holy wings or maybe special tracks, auras or anything that makes you look more impressive while providing no or next to no bonus.

I would like some things providing a bonus, but for it not to be unbalanced the penalty should be greater. so if it's a bonus to global fire spells the AI should notice the greater value of fire spells or should have free spells or a free shard.

As long as you don't tie those achievements to a specific mode of play (like only bieng able to unlock them playing multiplayer), those are nice things to have.

I just couldn't care less about achievements..............Look my digital D#$k is bigger than yours!

I have to say I especially dislike achievements that have a game balance impact, graphical sure, but actual bonuses please no.

My 2 cents.
