[Bug/Interface]Unable do build farm/mines after research

So this might be me being stupid, but Donald Norman tells me that there is no such thing, only stupid interfaces, so here goes:

I do not understand how to build a farm (or a mine) once researched...

1) I have three buildings in the build queue

2) I press the construction mode that's conveniently located in the queue

3) I press farm...

And here's where the interactivity fails:

*) Once I press the farm, a farm icon appears on the fertile land, but if I press done, it disappears

*) If I instead try to click on the fertile land to indicate I want my farm there, the farm icon also disappears

In both cases, I should get my farm. The interactivity should be designed so that I can't do wrong here.

Until this is fixed, how the hell do I get my farm?

I forgot to add:

I researched mining, yet the mine does not appear in the building tab, even though my blue border around the city expanded over a mine later on!

(For beginners, I do think the mine should appear in the tab regardless, but greyed out and with a popup message explaining why it can't be built if you click it.)

You need to be adjacent to the tile. Diagonals don't count.

End of vieuxchat's quote

Yea, well, even if I have to buy a non-English understanding of "adjacent" to play the game, I agree with eobet that the UI should be either simply explaining itself to me on the point or making it 'intuitively' obvious.

I'm sure there are several ways to tweak the UI in this regard. The obvious one to me is that improvement icons on the Building tab need to indicate whether they are possible to commission with your current set of available sub-tiles.
