24 Hour Impulses: The Concept

24 Hour Impulses: The Concept

Over the past few months we’ve been working on creating a system to send users “instant messages” via the Impulse tray program.  Now users who have “Show Promotions” enabled in their “Impulse Now” settings can receive balloon notifications from their system tray on special offers that come in.

Here’s how it works:

[Need a nice screenshot of a balloon showing up <g>].  Impulse has been working to put together a series of special promotions during the month of December. Anyone with Impulse installed and has the tray program running (which it is by default) and hasn’t turned off promotions will start receiving special offers.

These aren’t ordinary sales, however. They’re special deals we’ve put together with developers that only exist for 24 hours and are priced at a level we aren’t able to promote on our main websites.

The first test promotion was Galactic Civilizations for $0.99.  We will be doing some “warm up specials” over the coming week as we prepare for the Impulse “12 days of Christmas” where AAA titles will start to get steep discounts.

To participate, simply download and install Impulse (www.impulsedriven.com).  The tray program, Impulse Now, will automatically be installed (you can also load it immediately by typing impulsenow via the Start menu).

But I have been observing that the USD to INR (Indian Rupees) ratio is always shown higher than it is at that time or even during the last 48 hours or so. I hope that is not intentional!

At the time of purchase, the correct exchange rate will be applied no matter what the price quoted on impulse or the stardock store.

As for the popups offers......don't bug me a bit. It's no more annoying than the MSN popups when one of your friends logs on. Hate it?.......disable it.

By the way, I don't get why people are complaining that they had to be told you that you can turn off the notifications. Most proggies have a settings menu......it's normal and logical.

Most guys probably wish their wife/GF had a nag 'turn off' button as that appears to be on by default... ;)

Thanks! That will do, although still not OK.

I love these little notifications! I woke up today and saw that I could buy Space Rangers 2 for almost nothing. :D

I do not mind the pop ups at all, especially if it is a program I want. Thank you Stardock!

One question, are these deals available to absolutely anybody, because I was going to post an entry about it on my DA journal, but did not want to give out any wrong information. Just wanted to share the good sales to other customizers.

Wondering the same thing. I feel it necessary to nag my sister to finally play Space Rangers 2 which I have owned for awhile now.

I don't understand why I have impulse, but no impulsenow? Can't find it anywhere on impulse or in program files.

A quick catch:  When you check out, you can see the coupon code that is used to apply the discount.  You can then use that code with any store, whether they have seen the promo or not.  A simple "Special promotion" flag on the coupon could turn this:

"* The XXXXXX coupon has saved you $18.00."

Into:

"Taking part in a special promotion has saved you $18.00."

I hate these 24-hour offers. No, not because the pop-ups annoy me or anything, the opposite in fact: it's far too easy to miss the pop-up the first time and then you have no way of knowing unless you actively remember to right-click on the tray icon and select "View Promotions...". Perhaps they could add an opt-in feature where it annoys you even *more* about the promos? a big click-through message when you start Impulse or such, maybe, keeping the current "small tray bubble" as the default of course.

I can't believe I missed Space Rangers 2 :( hopefully they'll have a "second round" for all promos on X-Mas, otherwise I'm gonna hate myself. Or build a time machine, dunno really.

I am a little curious as to what time zone "today only" is in. It's not PST as the day is not over here but the sale is over. Fortunately, I only own Space Rangers 2 and thoroughly enjoy it too!

Probably EST given thats the usual timeframe that SD works in.

I had the same problem, just reinstall impulse.

I agree that it's pretty spammy.  But I personally am glad to see the deals.  In my opinion, each and every company that I've installed software from (and I mean by explicitly running its setup program, not bundleware) gets a free pass to throw up one advertisement, once, after that it's opt-in.  Here's a solution I suggest would make everyone happy:

Add a dialog box version, that doesn't go away until dismissed.  Numerous people have said that the current system flicks by too fast (if you were distracted you missed it) and want something that will still be there when they come back from coffee.  The deal is naturally a hyperlink to the purchase page, there's also a Close button and the usual 'X' in the corner.  Actually the current "list of promotions" accessible via right-click on the Impulse icon could probably be used for this.

Put a "don't show me advertisements like this again" checkbox on that dialog.  This step is ABSOLUTELY NOT OPTIONAL.

Put a link to the ImpulseNow settings on that dialog.

Add a larger customize ad delivery window which will be used for the first ad after installation.  This window will explain about the special offers, using the currently available offer as an example.  Instead of a 'Close' button, ask the user to select how they want to see ads in the future:

* Don't show ads

* Show ads in a window that waits until I click Close

* Show messages using a notification bubble that disappears after 10 seconds

Showing pictures of each option to help with the choice is a good thing.

If the user closes the window (e.g. using the 'X', or by killing it with Task Manager, or logging out) without making a selection, no more offers shall be presented for let's say 90 days, then the customize ad delivery choices would be presented again.  There'd be a button on the main settings window to revisit the customize ad delivery window(e.g. there's a dropdown list to select between None/In Window/As Balloon with an "explain..." button to the side).

Of course the user preference would be kept across Impulse updates.  Everyone who is currently opted out would be kept opted-out.  Everyone who currently has the default setting (show notifications) would see the customize ad delivery window and positively opt in or out as they desire.

This would be less annoying than pretty much any other piece of software you care to name that has online registration.  I think it's the right balance between opt-in/opt-out for a company I've already chosen to do business with.  The key is that the opt-out button must be on the very first unsolicited window shown.

Comments?  People want to call me an idiot for this idea?  People want to boycott the special offer system until Stardock adds this customize ad delivery window?

So far I don't find it too bad, and I check it daily with or without noticing the notification. What I am wondering, for purely selfish reasons, is if Steam is going to do something like it? I don't allowe Steam to startup on my computer for the one game I have through them, but if they start doing this I might have to check them out daily too.

Maybe my memory is a little off, but i remember thinking I had no reason to by from Steam D2D years ago because all they did was sell games at retail price when I could get 20-30% off my titles locally or on Amazon during their sales. Then Impulse was in my radar and they did weekly specials and what do you know, the others did the same thing. I am all for sales! Still I don't want to have to load all these programs just to see a sale (yes I know its not really a "have to" but I suspect most know what I mean.

No, Steam allows you to see all sales through their website, under the Specials tab. It does show notification windows for some deals, but no deal is ever announced through there that doesn't also appear on the Specials so don't worry about keeping the client open. Besides, nearly all sales they've done last for at least two or three days so you don't even have to visit daily, the only exception was the special TF2 sale during Halloween which only lasted for 3 hours but I don't think they'll be repeating that model soon.

And bvoigt, while I understand your point, I think most people would find a small bubble far less intrusive than even a single click-through window, even with a "don't show me this again" option. Counter-intuitive? perhaps, but people are weird like that. Still, it's not a bad idea either, specially as it'd inform people of what exactly are those deals, and it'd solve my problem of missing them quite nicely as well ;)

So what do I do when it doesnt show up? I have "show promotions" checked, but there are no promotions showing up.  I'm at a loss.  Hopefully someone has some idea of whats up.

Well as a greedy gamer, the reason I like the 24 hour Impulses is that someone (i.e. someone not me) is helping subsidize these special deals that you just normally wouldn't get.

Anyone remember when Buy.com first came out? If you weren't there, you missed out. It was a fabulous age of the .COM's and they were selling below cost. Good times.

The Impulse Now deals aren't quite like that but they're cases where people are "eating" it a little bit to give customers a better deal and I like better deals.

I hope I don't sound like a cheapskate here but I'll buy whatever gives me the best deal -- even if I'm buying it off Steam or somewhere else. I know I should be loyal to Impulse and all and truth be told, Impulse usually does have the better deal (i.e. Steam will do a 25% off right after Impulse does a 33% off) but if Steam does a better deal, I'll buy it there instead.

What I won't do, however, is buy from a website.  I'm done with that.  Between iTunes and Xbox 360 there's no way I'm going to a website to buy stuff that I'm downloading. But that's just me.

I'm with you for the most part Frogboy.  Although when D2D had Mass Effect for $5, I simply couldnt wait any longer for Impulse to serve it.  I felt dirty (as I was waiting for Impulse), but the game is just so much fun and that sort of deal is literally a no risk, no brainer.  Now when steam had 15 THQ games for $50, I couldnt pass on that one either.  All of the DoW, CoH, RF, and a few others was just too good to pass up (even though I already had about a third of the games between steam and Impulse).

I really want to get in on the 12 days deals thing.  I did get the one yesterday and perhaps that is why it's not showing up today.  If there isnt anything new from last night, then it might simply not be showing up.  But it would be nice if it showed the deal further in the event I wanted to buy it as a christmas present for a friend as well as myself.  But I'm thinkin something is simply bugged.  I just restarted to no avail.  I thought being in hibernation mode all day might have done something as it does wierd things to programs that expect to be online and suddenly dont have a connection.

Anyway hope someone can help me resolve the problem without reinstalling all of Impulse.

Verkinix, no deal has shown up for me either for the last 48 hours or so, but I suspect it is just because there is no sale available for my region. I certainly hope that there is no bug when the Christmas sale is on. And I also hope that there will be sales available for me, or else I will just have to go and buy stuff from Steam or D2D. Not something I want to do.

I'm glad it's not just me.  I think if there was a full Sins &/or Demigod sale, I might have to purchase copies for a friend or two.  At this point, however, I already own just about every game I wanted and the few I dont have are only available on steam and D2D currently.  Everything else is preorder and I'll probably wait a bit on most of them as they seem like they are "hype" games that will fall short of the price justification (even if they are on sale).  Sadly, I'm simply running out of games to purchase across platforms.  There are a few I would purchase again on Impulse if they were on a fairly good sale.  I'm still routin for Impulse though!
